WHAT TO EXPECT

Located in our Rochester Hills office, you will be working within the New Product and Innovation team, as such you will be working on new ideas/concepts and evaluating their feasibly for new products.


  • This senior position is responsible for all aspects of Mechanical design, including requirements gathering, concept development, Engineering calculations, component selection, 3D design, prototype build and testing. Should the design go forward to become a product, you will also support with the Engineering team to ensure the critical design characteristics are implemented as required and act a technical subject expert for the new designs generated by the team.

  • The role requires strong engineering background in product design involving die-casting, forging, injection molding, spring manufacture, cold heading, powder-metal, application of bearings and machining, power transmission technology and electromechanical devices.

Key responsibilities:


  • Ideation and concept design, including 3D CAD, engineering calculations and design verification, drawings for prototyping.

  • Works closely with other Product Design Engineers, Systems Engineers, Program Managers, Manufacturing Engineers, Quality Engineers, Purchasing, Sales and Customer Engineers to create the most efficient and lowest cost solution for our customers.

  • Responsible for the engineering, testing and validation of new products that meet or exceed our customer's expectations.

  • Design prototype assembly fixtures.

  • Design test fixtures.

  • Interfacing with potential suppliers as required to get the components needed to support the design.

  • Interfacing with potential machining, injection molding, casting suppliers as required to support the design.

POSITION DIMENSIONS (SCOPE)

  • This position reports to the New Technology Sr Manager and is responsible for developing, testing and supporting new technology development around BLDC motors applications.

CONTACTS

  • External contact with supplier to acquire components meeting Gates requirement and standards. Internal contact with global engineering team, Product Release team as required when a new concept proceeds to being developed into an actual product.








ABOUT YOU

Minimum Requirements:


  • 4-Year Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

  • 10 years of experience in electromechanical devices and/or transmissions product development.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills.

  • Strong hands-on skills.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.

  • Able to present technical information to customers and management.

  • Agile and Analytical thinking.

  • Outside the box thinker.

  • Communicates appropriate product technical details to Product Development Team (PDT).

  • Expert in CAD/CAE (Pro-E preferred, Catia, Unigraphics, Solidworks preferred).

  • Knowledge on the effective use of DVP&R (validation) and DFMEA (risk management).

  • Knowledge on the application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).


  • Travel to supplier facilities and plant and global facilities is required.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship.

Preferred:


  • Automotive product development experience.

  • Strong project management skills.

  • International company experience.

  • Firmware development experience.

  • Knowledge and/or interest in e-bike motors control strategies a plus.
