Job Description:

We are looking for an experienced pharmacist with a passion for helping our retail customers. The pharmacist will also discuss medications with doctors and nurses, filling and refilling prescriptions and verifying drug interactions with the resident records for our long term care facilities. As a pharmacist, you will review prescriptions, check patient files for possible drug interactions, dispense prescribed medication, and answer patient questions about prescribed and over-the-counter medications and their use. When necessary, you will also collaborate and advise health practitioners on drug dosage and selection. Our ideal candidate has at least two years of retail pharmacy experience.

Prepares medication by reviewing and interpreting physician orders, detecting therapeutic incompatibilities.
Review and interpret physicians' orders for appropriateness relevant to other departments (e.g., drugs for diagnostic procedures, laboratory tests) to ensure that overdoses or under-doses have not been prescribed and that interactions, incompatibilities or toxic compounds will not result from combination of medications. Ensures that drugs are appropriately labeled, stored and utilized according to physicians' instructions.
Dispenses prescriptions to patients in accordance with facility policy and in conformance with regulations and laws dealing with the class of prescription; counsels patients about their medications and maintains an accurate, up-to-date patient profile.
Maintains necessary controls with respect to audited controlled drugs and alcohol; prepares controlled drug requests for delivery by a technician to the designated nursing unit and ensures that the order is accurate; processes returns as necessary.
Supervises prepackaging of drugs and control procedures.
Dispenses medication by compounding, packaging and labeling pharmaceuticals.
Controls medications by monitoring drug therapies; advising interventions.
Completes pharmacy operational requirements by organizing and directing technicians' work flow verifying their preparation and labeling of pharmaceuticals; verifying order entries, charges, and inspections.
Provides pharmacological information by answering questions and requests of healthcare professionals; counseling patients on drug therapies.
Develops staff's pharmacological knowledge by training pharmacy staff, students, interns, externs, residents and health care professionals.
Provides drug information such as dosing, compatibilities and formulary substitutes to nursing, physicians and other health care practitioners.
Prepares specialized solutions for administration via intravenous route and ensures that the stability and sterility of these solutions is appropriate for patient consumption.
Arranges to obtain drugs in emergency situations.
Verifies the work performed by support personnel, which includes patient drug data entry, cassette filling and unit-dose drug distribution.
Complies with state and federal drug laws as regulated by the state board of pharmacy, the drug enforcement administration, and the food and drug administration; maintaining records for controlled substances; removing outdated and damaged drugs from the pharmacy inventory; supervising the work results of support personnel; maintaining current registration; studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; advising management on needed actions; and by complying with National Standards of Continuing Education to maintain professional competency and proficiency.
Protects patients and technicians by adhering to infection control procedures.
Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations.
Maintains pharmacological knowledge by attending educations workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to bear weight of 50 pounds or more.
Requires constant physical activities including standing, walking, lifting, bending, stooping, pulling, stretching, turning, grasping, squatting, kneeling and reaching.
Visual acuity to determine the accuracy, thoroughness and quality of work assigned.
The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
Aural acuity to receive detailed information through oral communication, often from persons with speech impairment.
Safety-sensitive position pursuant to A.R.S. 23-493.

REQUIRED MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Registered pharmacist degree prior to January 1, 2003; or
Doctor of Pharmacy degree after January 1, 2003.
Licensed with the AZ Board of Pharmacy.
Licensed with Drug Enforcement Agency.
Minimum of 30 continuing education hours every 2 years.
General record keeping and assisting the public.

SPECIAL JOB REQUIREMENT(S)

Obtain/maintain Arizona Department of Public Safety Fingerprint Card at employee's expense.
Complete annual Tuberculosis Testing.
Complete in-service training as required.
Mandated federal, state, and local communicable disease testing as required.
