Overview

SJS Executives, LLC (SJS), also doing business as SJS Industrial, is seeking a reliable, safety conscious, journeyman-level High Voltage Electrician (HVE) to work full time for SJS in Ventura, California to help support the utility operations at a US Navy facility.

SJS is a Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) with 250 employees coast to coast and a headquarters in Virginia Beach, Virginia; it specializes in professional services to support federal and military organizations.

This High Voltage Electrician needs to be a Level II technician, meaning he or she must possess at least one of these 3 key qualifications to be eligible for this job:

  • A Level III Electrical Testing Technician (ETT) certification; or
  • Equivalent proof of 4 years of electrician experience; or
  • 8,000 hours of electrical-type training to such a program administered by an electric utility.
  • The right candidate will have strong working knowledge of the high voltage electricity trade, sound knowledge of electrical theory and formulas and the mathematical skills to accurately calculate and apply voltage, current and power-related formulas.

    He or she will already have experience in overhead and underground distribution system construction and maintenance of distribution systems and substations/switchyards; in maintenance and repair including splicing and termination of medium voltage cables from 2400 Vac to 69K vac and DC voltages from 12 Vdc to 300 Vdc.

    The ideal candidate for this position is a Navy veteran with an understanding of the Navy Safety and Health Requirement manual, related agency equipment regulations and directives and Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) publications, manuals, directives, standards, policies, and procedures pertaining to high voltage electrical systems maintenance and repair.

    This person will enjoy collaborating with a team and know how to conduct themselves with decorum, as they will be working on a property owned by the United States federal government and interacting daily with servicemembers in uniform.

    Responsibilities


    • Read and consult circuit diagrams to perform layout, complete installation, modification, and repair of high voltage distribution systems such as repairing switchgear, installing transformers, etc., including troubleshooting and fault diagnosis, such as locating defects in cables; select proper materials to make installations or repairs

    • Perform a variety of other high voltage electrical work including managing and executing outages to support construction activities on the base

    • Receive, execute and complete daily work orders in a timely fashion, planning each workday carefully to achieve all objectives within a normal 8-hour work period and without incurring overtime; a workload manager will provide background information about any anomalies or unusual circumstances pertaining to each work order, and they will also inspect the completed work daily to ensure proper quality

    • Perform troubleshooting using three-line, single, print and protection drawings to diagnose and determine proper corrective action for electric power-controlling equipment such as switch gear, transformer banks, circuit breakers in substations and power-generating facilities; read and understand circuit diagrams of interconnects such as the generators, buses, switches, and circuit breakers in a power-generating facility or the feeders, substations, transformers, and interconnections of a distribution system, in order to diagnose problems in the electrical system

    • Operate test equipment such as oscilloscopes, power quality meters, insulation resistance testers, high potential testers, phase sticks, phase rotation meters, digital test equipment, other electrical test equipment, and cable locating and fault finding equipment as needed daily

    • Perform routine installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairing of equipment in high voltage switchyards, substations, and power operations centers

    • Participate in special projects such as pre-commissioning/checkout of new substations, stage additions, or substation inspections, and commissioning preparation.

    • Must comply with safe clearance procedures and all related safety rules and regulations; must consistently and properly wear correct High Voltage Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times when working

    • Participate diplomatically in meetings with the SJS management team, Navy workload managers or contracting officers, and representatives of other companies

    • Document actual hours worked into an electronic timecard at the end of every workday; submit completed timecards electronically bi-weekly

    • Ensure all designated working areas are maintained in an orderly manner and continuously maintained free of trash and debris including at the end of the workday

    • Other high voltage electrical-related tasks as assigned by the SJS Director of West Coast Operations or his designee, which may be a government workload manager.


    Qualifications


    • Journeyman Lineman certification or equivalent (meaning one of the 3 key qualifications listed above)

    • Have some experience with low voltage systems including but not limited to maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairing power breakers

    • Valid California State Driver's License - "C" class

    • Be OSHA 10 - General Industry or Construction Certified before starting work; SJS may provide financial assistance for these courses if necessary

    • Be CPR Certified before starting work; SJS may provide financial assistance for these courses if necessary

    • Must be able to become a qualified person per NESC, NEC, NFPA 70E

    • Be able to read and interpret standard construction blueprints and operating manuals

    • Ability to perform regular and recurring field inspections, investigations, or surveys in which there is a considerable amount of physical activity including walking, stooping, bending, and climbing.

    • Work at heights, in confined spaces, and possibly in awkward positions for extended periods

    • Must be able to successfully pass a drug test and a thorough background check for access onto a military installation; please note the background check for this position extends past 7 years, in conformance with federal law and US Department of Justice guidelines for work on a military installation.
