Position Overview

 

Assistant Controller provides oversight of financial activities of the aggregates and delivery business units of the Northeast division: 4 producing sites (1 stone quarry, 3 sand & gravel), 6 rail yards, and delivery P&L.

 

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

 

The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

 

General

 


  • Oversight of financial activities of the aggregates and delivery business units of the Northeast division: 4 producing sites (1 stone quarry, 3 sand & gravel), 6 rail yards, and delivery P&L.

  • Prepare monthly financial statements ensuring all statements are appropriately analyzed and correctly stated.

  • Review balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis to confirm proper reconciliation and supporting documentation.

  • Review monthly financials with business unit managers addressing any issues.

  • Perform month end closing activities – accruals, energy entries, production entries, inventory adjustments, royalty payments, depletion entries, etc….

  • Prepare annual budgets and financial reforecasts as required.

  • Assist with DF3 monthly forecasting process.

  • Prepare for and respond to internal and external audit requests.

  • Compile/analyze financial data from multiple sources by way of Excel, Hyperion and Essbase.

  • Ensure adequate controls are in place and maintained to safeguard financial assets. This includes all SOX controls and OMG and Shelly accounting policies and procedures.

  • Ensure property management system is updated and maintained with accurate information as needed.

  • Prepare city tax returns.

  • Prepare Irish GAAP semi-annual reports.

  • Prepare annual IAS 37 reports.

 

Inventory and Costing

 


  • Maintain accurate inventory reporting for all locations.

  • Coordinate annual or semi-annual physical inventory taking.  Complete inventory reconciliation process.

  • Annual setting of standard costs at the producing locations.

  • Manage the capped inventory process.

  • Complete monthly inventory reconciliations and review of ending inventory.

 

Delivery

 


  • Prepare month end delivery reports and distribute.

  • Track and review all inbound rail deliveries to Rail Yards.  Prepare monthly accruals.

  • Prepare analysis to monitor lease car delivery profit/loss.

  • Verify billings from the NW Division.

 

Proactis

 


  • Review all Proactis issues and implement improvements.

  • Proactis Super User and Gatekeeper for SOX compliance.

  • Review Open PO’s in Proactis and identifies PO’s to be closed.

 

Other Requirements

  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.

  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.

  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Manual of Safety Practices and Procedures.

  • Strict adherence to Shelly Company policies and procedures as outlined in the Company Book of Policies.

  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Qualifications

 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Education and Experience

 


  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting/finance required.

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience and training in general finance and accounting areas.

  • Management experience is a plus but not required.

  • Proficient with Windows, Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

  • Hyperion experience is preferred but not required.

  • Proven analytical skills.

  • Ability to demonstrate initiative.

 

Language Skills

 


  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. 

  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 

  • Ability to speak effectively to customers or employees of organization.

 

Mathematical Skills

 


  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

 

Reasoning Ability

 


  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. 

  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Work Environment

 


  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee could work near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and exposed to wet, humid condition airborne particles, and extreme heat or cold.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually very quiet.
