The Supreme Court of Ohio has two Building Maintenance Technician (Maintenance Mechanic) positions open (two separate job postings):  Maintenance Mechanic II and Maintenance Mechanic III

The posting below is for a Maintenance Mechanic II

The Supreme Court of Ohio is seeking to fill the position of Building Maintenance Technician (Maintenance Mechanic II) in the Facilities Management Division.  The Maintenance Mechanic II performs general maintenance and upkeep of the interior, exterior and equipment of the facility resulting in a safe, comfortable, productive and attractive place to work and visit.  This entails keeping equipment and facility in reliable and efficient operating condition while ensuring maintenance and repair costs are appropriate. 

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Under the general supervision of the Maintenance Manager, independently and safely performs a variety of tasks that may include plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting and masonry, including:


  • Performs plumbing, electrical, HVAC and appliance repairs or installations (e.g., commercial coffee makers, microwave ovens, ice makers, clothes washers, dishwashers,  garbage disposals, etc.) in a large class A high-rise office building as directed, including but not limited to, problem troubleshooting and diagnosis,  ordering, lay-out and installing parts, or replacement of whole devices or units.  Works with more direct supervision from lead mechanics or Maintenance Manager on more complex projects.

  • Performs carpentry work as directed, which may include repair or installation of door trim and wall base, door closers and hinges, drywall repair, ceiling tile replacement, door lock removal and/or installation, repair of restroom partition hardware, etc. Performs small masonry, wall covering and painting repair/restoration projects as assigned.

  • Troubleshoots and completes repair of lawn irrigation systems including adjustment of control systems.

  • Responds to service requests from in-house customers, thoroughly identifies problems, root causes, and identifies solutions or options. Communicates with other people or departments as needed to make sure the facility is properly maintained and presentable and explains timing and process to customers.

  • Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance is required.


  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and 3-5 years of Maintenance experience in a large office building or environment requiring similar skills and training.

  • 3-5 years Maintenance experience with a building in excess of 7 stories and/or 100,000 square foot, general office or specialized public building preferred.

  • The incumbent must also have the demonstrated ability to read and understand blue prints and schematics and learn emergency shut-off locations and procedures for gas, water, electrical, etc.

  • Professional credentials or certifications and/or state certification or licensing in facility trades preferred.  Incumbent may be required to complete or show documentation of the completion of an apprenticeship, formal training, and/or certification in an area of specialty.

  • The incumbent must have the proven ability to work under limited supervision as well as demonstrate creativity and flexibility when completing assigned work.

  • General knowledge of common equipment and tools used in the building trades is required and must be able to safely and effectively use electrical meter(s) for testing low voltage up to 480 volt power, electrical continuity and amperage.

  • Other preferred training and experience includes:

    • DDC control system operation for HVAC, energy management and lighting control

    • Experience with air conditioning systems of various types/sizes

    • Experience/training with Hydronic and/or steam boiler systems

    • Training for hazard avoidance in working with or near materials common to high-rise office building maintenance, including refrigerants, solvents, cleaners, adhesives, paints, water treatment, and lubricants.

    • Three-phase 480-volt electrical and lighting training and associated OSHA and NFPA safety training

    • High rise sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems training/experience

    • Building codes – demonstrable expertise and experience

    • The demonstrated ability or necessary training and certification to operate forklift, man- lifts, and other equipment
