Job Description:


Moffatt & Nichol is seeking a Transportation Engineer to join our Richmond or Norfolk, Va. office. M&N provides a wide variety of transportation engineering services to VDOT, County, municipal and private clients. We are looking for an individual with strong written and verbal communication skills with a proven ability to assist and grow into leading projects and teams. This individual must be energetic, self-directed, and success-focused.

Duties and responsibilities:


  • Manage engineering projects from concept through completion including design, planning, computations, quality assurance, and will train to take on project management responsibilities

  • Plan, schedule, and complete work assignments within established budgets and timelines

  • Utilize knowledge of VDOT, municipal design standards and criteria, and practices and policies

  • Prepare design documents and reports for railroad, roadway, trail, and sidewalk projects

  • Assist in preparing proposals

  • Develop specifications, cost estimates, and prepare final bid packages

  • Occasional travel to other offices and provide project support as needed

  • Perform limited field observations in support of construction and data collection

  • Coordinate design activities and meetings between design staff, subcontractors, and client managers

  • Mentor and assist junior engineers in developing final design plans, including but not limited to implementation and knowledge of roadway and/or rail alignment design, cross sections, traffic control, drainage, and signing and pavement markings plans

Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering; required
    • Transportation emphasis preferred


  • 6-10 years of related experience in highway/roadway/rail engineering design; required

  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration; required. Virginia PE, or ability to obtain within 12 months; preferred

  • Knowledge of AASHTO, VDOT, municipal design standards and criteria, and practices and policies

  • Experience working with AREMA, CSA, Norfolk Southern and/or other railroad design standards; preferred

  • Proficiency with: MicroStation, OpenRoad Designer or OpenRail Designer; required

  • Occasional work requirements beyond normal working hours for deadline completion or to accommodate field conditions

  • All new hires will be required to complete and pass a background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Physical requirements:

Majority of work is office based. Some site visits may be required which may necessitate navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment.
