Associate Relations Consultant at Ascensus in Des Moines, Iowa

Job Description:

The Associate Relations Consultant will provide a dedicated, high quality, professional and expert associate relations service to all managers and associates in relevant market. This role is responsible for the execution and ownership of associate relations processes and practices, providing expert Consultant and guidance to leaders and associates. This role will lead on specific complex or sensitive cases and formal processes for all levels the organization. The Associate Relations Consultant will also be responsible for ensuring legislative and relevant Ascensus Policy compliance in the execution of business activity and Ascensus culture and ensuring that applicable Ascensus policies are up to date, compliant, maintained, and appropriate for business needs.



Section 2: Job Functions, Essential Duties and Responsibilities



40% Advice, Counsel and Compliance



  • Provide Consultant and expert advice, general guidance, and counsel to all levels of associates and HR colleagues on associate relations issues, policy interpretations and questions. To include such issues as conduct, capability (performance and sickness), re-organization, terminations of employment, associate complaints, and compliance issues.

  • Ensure that any associate relations issues are dealt with in the highest level of confidentiality, professionalism, and sensitivity.

  • Champion and promote a positive associate relations climate, providing appropriate counsel and support to ensure that any associate relations processes are delivered to maximize the associate experience.

  • Where appropriate, engage with appropriate internal or external Consultant s and advisors to gain specific legal or best practice advice on specific cases, policy revision, cross market issues etc. to ensure the best advice is provided.

  • Provide HR representation for leaders and associates in any formal processes for all levels in the organization (disciplinary, performance, sickness, absence, etc.) ensuring decisions are consistent with best practice, legislation, Ascensus culture and policy.

  • Provide and update templates, coaching and guidance and advice to leaders in the completion of associate relation process, working to ensure robust and equitable outcomes.



  • Ensure any associate relations situations are closed with appropriate recommendations action steps and appropriate action follow ups are actioned.


25% Associate Relations Process Delivery



  • Partner with third party administrator and Benefits on FMLA, Alternative Work Arrangement and Reasonable Accommodation processes.

  • Process owner of the exit management process in mutual separations, reorganizations, or termination of associates.

  • Lead and participate in various projects within Human Resources.

  • Develop communications and/or edit Human Resources policies and guidelines when project requires.

  • Research, benchmark, and produce detailed reports, in support of the development of HR management practices ensuring decisions are consistent with best practice, legislation, Ascensus culture and policy.

  • Monitor and enforce government regulations and legislations.

  • Work as a liaison between the business units and human resources.

  • Participate in interdepartmental initiatives and projects as a HR Subject Matter Expert (SME).

  • Manage client expectations, clearly explain policies, processes, procedures, and service timelines.

  • Assist with other tasks and projects as assigned.


15% Investigations



  • Investigate workplace complaints of violations of policy of law for which failure to investigate may subject Ascensus to serious legal or financial risk.

  • Develop and apply knowledge of employment and discrimination laws, whistle blowing laws, rules of evidence and other laws pertaining to investigating plans, investigation reports and recommendations.

  • Able to track, maintain and follow through and advise on recommendations in order to influence solutions wherein repeatable issues are addressed.


20% Tracking and Solutions, Proactive Training and Education



  • Participates in or lead projects as appropriate, in the proactive enhancement of Ascensus associate relations climate, in response to issues as a part of broader HR or business priorities.

  • Use a range of available data, identify actual and potential associate relations issues, and provide a practical solution to resolve in line with best practice, legislation, Ascensus culture and policy.

  • Provide training and expertise to other HR COEs as necessary.

  • Complete and maintain appropriate logs/tracker/systems to ensure a full picture of associate relations activity - informal and formal process, advice given, outcomes issues and inquiries.

Section 3: Experience, Skills, Knowledge Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of 5 - 8 years' experience in the Human Resources field with strong Associate Relations focused role.

  • General understanding of all functional areas of Human Resources.

  • Ability to work cross-functionally within Human Resources as well as effectively interact with other departments within Ascensus to build strong relationships.

  • Ability to shift focus, multi-task, and prioritize in a rapidly changing environment.

  • Productivity - prioritize tasks, develop effective work procedures, manage time well, sense of urgency and an ability to instill it in others when necessary.

  • Experience maintaining associate information in an HRIS system, Workday experience a plus.

  • Solid knowledge of Employment Law.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to regularly assume a broad variety of moderately complex administrative duties, assemble reports containing confidential and sensitive information and respond to questions or requests.

  • Experience and working knowledge of federal and state respective employment laws.

  • High level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations and documentation.

  • Works with limited supervision.

  • Detailed oriented with strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Good listening skills; negotiate effectively.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with internal and external clients.

  • Must be a self-starter and work independently.

  • Motivated and innovative.

  • Customer service driven and client focused.

  • Must be adaptable to change.

  • SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) credential a plus.
