Job Description

The Category Development Manager (CDM) is responsible for translating category management principles into action through data analytics and consumer/shopper insights. This position will report to the Sr. Team Leader, Drug and Dollar. This is a Grade 9 role where the primary focus is to support the Dollar General - AFC business. They will be working with the cross functional team to deliver our Dollar Share, and Net Sales commitments. The incumbent will conduct advanced analytics and develop data inspired strategies, recommendations, and tactics utilizing internal data, syndicated data, Panel, and shopper data, as well as Consumer/Shopper Insights.  CDM will assist in developing comprehensive category strategies focused on shopper centricity, enabling greater sell-thru and market share gains.

Category Management


  • Become a subject matter professional in assigned category and provide thought leadership to customer and internal sales team.

  • Use principles of Category Management to inform recommendations for category and brand growth and leverage information to grow customers category.

  • Conduct strategic category and channel analyses and reports, incorporating appropriate resources. Filter through several data sources to build strategies that drive high-caliber results. Perform strategic competitive analysis by category and brand to capture trends, opportunities and challenges for core business areas.

  • Develop strategic business plans, vision, tactics and strategies for achieving category growth.

  • Stay current on consumer trends for various retail channels.

  • Use knowledge of shopper and consumer to recommend optimal category assortments, flows, adjacencies, cross merch opportunities, etc.

Reporting and Data Analytics


  • Develop category reporting, glean insights and turn into actions to drive profitable growth.

  • Understand category purchase drivers, trip missions, shopper need states, etc. and liaise with Customer Development and Category Development on executional strategies.

  • Provide strategic category direction based on syndicated and HH panel data.

Multi-channel Experience


  • Provide insight and perspective of the various channel dynamics on assigned categories.

  • Monitor channel shifting and the associated trends reflected in the marketplace

  • Form perspective on multi-channel purchasing behaviors (e.g.  P2P, B&M vs Ecom, site to store, etc.)

  • Understand how online purchase behaviors differ from those in-store and how we can capitalize on those differences.

Shopper Understanding


  • Ability to synthesize large amounts of data (e.g. Shopper Research, POS, loyalty card information, etc.) into actionable insights.

  • Use knowledge of shopper and consumer to recommend optimal category assortments, flows, adjacencies, cross merch opportunities, etc.

  • Build in-store category innovation into all category leadership discussions (e.g. aisle reinvention, store of the future, disruptive merchandising strategies, etc.)

Project Management


  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.

  • Manage flow of information and requests from customer, Customer Development, Business Units, etc.

Additional Skills


  • Ability to build solid sustainable business relationships at all levels and functions of the organization and with customers and customer teams.

  • Excellent communication skills – both written and verbal.

  • Direct and perform analysis across a wide variety of category business issues and make fact-based recommendations.

  • Must be able to link business objectives with winning growth strategies.

  • Convey complex issues brilliantly with excellent communication and presentation skills.

Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree (emphasis in business/marketing or related field)

  • 3-5 years of experience working with a leading CPG company (Category Management, Shopper Insights, Sales or related position)

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Category Management philosophies, tools and processes and proven record of success.  Category Management Association certification a plus

  • Demonstrated success in leading Category Development (Category Captain) engagements with a major retailer

  • Strategic thinking, self-starter with ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with compelling deadlines

  • Advanced analytical skills and computer software proficiency (e.g. Excel, Access, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Tableau, etc.)

  • Sound familiarity with syndicated data and systems, measures and software (e.g. Nielsen/Nitro, IRI, Consumer Panel, Spectra, ECRM or Market Track, XP3, etc.)

  • Experienced in space management principles and software with ability to draw POGs (e.g. JDA, JDA Cloud, POG Generator, etc.)
