Summary: The Power Collection Products Application Engineer (PCPAE) will be stationed at Wabtec Bus Products in Buffalo Grove Illinois. This position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Electro-Mechanical) and a minimum of four years' experience preferably in AC/DC high power transmission applications. This individual will be responsible to review specific customers' technical needs and specifications and will collaborate with customers as well as in-house sales and engineering teams to determine suitable product solutions, based on current systems and equipment, that address these requirements. This individual may be required to prepare and perform technical presentations to prospective customers that highlight key features and functions of the proposed solution concepts. Some travel will be required. Once a technical solution path is identified, this individual will prepare technical proposals, including product and project cost estimates, and will work closely with the sales team to complete formal customer quotations. Additionally, the PCPAE will work closely with product engineers and designers to design and develop required product solutions. Furthermore, this individual will work with several in-house cross functional teams in the following capacities (to name a few):


Supply chain team to source and qualify "Buy America" product component parts and subassemblies. Manufacturing team to address product manufacturing questions / issues. Quality team to assist with product quality issues, customer complaints and problem-solving exercises. Engineering and sales/service teams to resolve problems that may arise during and after product field implementation.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes product or equipment specifications and performance requirements to determine designs, which can be produced by existing manufacturing or processing facilities and methods.

  • Determines feasibility of designing new equipment considering costs, available space, time limitations, company planning, and other technical and economic factors.

  • Provides technical information materials, properties, and process advantages and limitations which affect long range plant and product engineering planning.

  • Confers with subject matter experts to clarify or resolve problems and develops design.

  • Prepares or directs preparation of product or system layout and detailed drawings and schematics.

  • Directs and coordinates manufacturing or building of prototype product or system.

  • Compiles and analyzes operational, test, and research data to establish performance standards for newly designed or modified equipment or product.

  • Assures that product design meets all customer and regulatory requirements.

  • Analyzes test data and reports to determine if design meets functional and performance specifications.

  • Confers with research and other engineering personnel and prepares design modifications as required.

  • Evaluates engineering test results for possible application to developments of systems or other uses.


Qualifications:

  • Electro-Mechanical Design Knowledge - Has working knowledge of mechanisms used in AC/DC power transmission applications - Vehicle Pantograph system design knowledge is a plus.

  • Electro-Mechanical Elements, Manufacturing Processes and Product Compliance Requirements - Understand design elements and processes used in the design and manufacturing of said devices as well as industry and regulatory product compliance requirements (UL, SAE etc.)

  • Ability to utilize Creo - basic modeling and assembly, technical drawing standards and drafting practices, sections, detail views and exploded assemblies

  • Have basic proficiency in Microsoft Project

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems

  • Strong competency in Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project


Education/Experience:

  • Bachelors of Science degree (B. S.) in engineering

  • Minimum 4 years of experience in the field or in a related area.

  • Knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures.

  • Works under immediate supervision.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit. The employee is frequently required to walk. The employee is occasionally required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear.
