Summary/Objectives
The Spherical Optics Manufacturing Engineer will be responsible for developing, sustaining, and managing optical fabrication processes and for selection & process management of equipment used to fabricate spherical optical elements used in Zygo’s world-class Profilers and Interferometers. New Product Introduction & production line support will be a significant aspect of the job. Optical design is not a job requirement but working knowledge of optical element design, optical assembly alignment & optical metrology testing is essential to be successful on the job. The engineer will also be responsible for documenting all process & test work instructions and provide training to production technicians. Exposure to Optical design software is a plus.

Essential Functions (reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions)
1. Develop/support manufacturing processes used to fabricate Spherical Optics. Partner with master opticians to define optics grinding and/or polishing concepts, develop prototype processes, testing procedures, analyze results and convert to actual process for implementation in optics production
2. Knowledge of pre, in process and post fabrication geometry machining
3. Identify, Plan and Implement Process Improvements using Statistical Process Controls – Standardize/Document, Measure, Compare, Correct
4. Program polishing equipment to enable accurate spherical polishing processes. Use assistance from Equipment Manufacturers & Equipment manuals as required
5. Review existing spherical polishing processes and improve processes for enhanced product quality
6. Review data for completed jobs and compare to process standards in the event of disparities. Initiate pertinent process review & corrective actions
7. Create optical work instructions (OWI’s) to be used by production technicians. Author new work instructions and update existing work instructions
8. Identify and design tooling to enable improved manufacturability
9. Analyze production and field failures & provide Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA). Recommend corrective actions

Position Requirements:
Ametek Requires all new hires to be vaccinated.

Required Education and Experience

4 Year Bachelors in Optical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or Equivalent Engineering Degree (Preferred). Equivalent experience will also be considered.
5+ years of Professional experience with a degree
10+ years of Professional experience without a degree

Required Competencies
1. Experience in Plano or Spherical Polishing in a production environment
2. Must have a comprehensive knowledge of optical fabrication and glass manufacturing, machining, and polishing processes such as pre-edging, generating, grinding, and polishing
3. Experience in Optical Test Methodologies
4. Working knowledge of Optical Element Design & Metrology
5. Experience with various optical materials such as: SCHOTT N-BK7, OHARA S-TIH6 & FUSED SILICA
6. Experience in conducting Root Cause & Corrective Action for failed Optical components and assembly’s
7. Ability to read blueprints
8. Ability to use mechanical solid modelling software such as SOLIDWORKS for tooling design and other design reviews
9. Ability to write detailed assembly and test work instructions using Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
10. Proficiency in one or more Optical Design Software such as Zemax is a plus
11. Demonstrate results driven work ethic and assume ownership and accountability for areas of responsibility
12. Identify process bottlenecks and drive improvement/solutions through individual effort and engagement of relevant company resources
13. Excellent Verbal & Written Skills
14. Excellent and Timely Communication
