Job Description:

SUMMARY


California’s Microbial Diseases Laboratory is responsible for the diagnostics, education, and applied research programs for identification, surveillance, control, and prevention of bacterial, mycobacterial, fungal, and parasitic diseases originating in humans.


Under the direction of the Program Chief of the Microbial Diseases Laboratory (MDL) Program, the Public Health Microbiologist Intern performs microbiological and similar biological analyses in a training capacity; to receive orientation and guidance in the application of laboratory methods in various aspects of public health microbiology; and to do other related work to extend capacity for laboratory emergency preparedness.


Applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree in a biological science AND must have a valid Public Health Microbiologist Trainee certificate. The incumbent should be experienced in working with microorganisms, standard precautions, and molecular analysis. Maintaining an organized, neat, and clean work environment, working well in a team environment, and being organized and detail-oriented are essential.


The position is located in Richmond, CA and is Monday-Friday, up to 40 hours per week. This position is a temporary from 1/3/2022 through 9/30/2022.

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS



  • Receives instruction in and performs microbiological examinations for the detection and identification of microbial agents of disease using well defined laboratory procedures,

  • Assists in the preparation of stains, culture media, and reagents

  • Reads assigned material from scientific literature

  • Keeps records and makes reports on assignments received.

  • May assist with development, validation, and implementation of new and/or improved procedures such as, but not limited to new and/or improved testing assays and methodologies, as assigned.

  • Perform maintenance of instruments and equipment.

  • Cultivate bacterial pathogens and quality control strains.

  • Specimen receipt and data entry into Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).

  • Comply with the quality management system established in the laboratory.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS



  • Ability to perform micromanipulations such as pipetting small volumes and other fine measurements using laboratory instrumentation and equipment.

  • Minimum of 1 year of microbiology experience and/or training that includes knowledge of standard biosafety precautions for working with potential infectious clinical specimens, sterile technique, and molecular methods (PCR).

  • Experience working at Biosafety Level 2 (BSL 2)

 Education/Experience



  • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university with course work in chemistry, microbiology, and/or molecular biology

 Certificates/Licenses



  • Possession of a Public Health Microbiologist Trainee certificate
