Ashland has an exciting opportunity for a QC Laboratory Supervisor to join our Ashland ISP Freetown Fine Chemicals business at our Assonet, Massachusetts facility. This is a very visible, significant role within the Company and the Quality function. This position will report to the Manager of Quality Systems.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:


  • Always ensure safe and effective operation of the lab including shift coverage as required to support quality control for the plant.

  • Collaborates with the Manager of Quality Systems to ensure the approval and timely release of all products through the LIMS and Inventory Management systems.

  • Troubleshoots and repairs (or arranges for instrument supplier service visit to repair) analytical lab instruments and equipment (GC’s, HPLC’s, FTIR, viscometers, pH meters, auto-titrators, etc.)

  • Develops new test methods as necessary, and works with other Ashland analytical labs to transfer-in and implement new test methods in the Freetown labs.

  • Performs routine analytical tests and procedures to support production and process development groups as needed

  • Training of lab analysts on all lab processes and methods, both current and new.

  • Maintains ISO and cGMP compliance in QC Lab.

  • Prepares standard operating procedures.

  • Work with process engineers to troubleshoot product and process excursions.

  • Ensures all instrumentation is calibrated and maintained and coordinates with the Manager of Quality Systems to evaluate and recommend new laboratory equipment

  • Coordinates collection of data for Plant Engineers, Production, and Quality Systems Manager reports and batch packet review.

  • Lead continuous improvement efforts in the quality department.

In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:


  • Minimum BS in Chemistry with relevant experience

  • Solid hands-on experience operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining (including minor repairs) analytical equipment:  GC, GC/MS, HPLC, FTIR, etc.

  • Experience in ISO/cGMP lab environment, including responsibility for release of products, highly desirable.

The following skill sets are preferred by the business unit:


  • Sound and practical knowledge of Analytical Chemistry and Chemical Manufacturing Processes.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to troubleshoot instrument failures and provide minor repairs when necessary to minimize downtime.

  • Ability to provide analytical support in the absence of developed testing procedures and determine the cause of inconsistent or unexpected analytical results.

  • In depth knowledge of laboratory instrumentation.

  • Knowledge of LIMS, SAP, Label Matrix, MS Word, Excel, and Chromatography Data Acquisition software.

  • Knowledge of quality systems including ISO, cGMP, Halal, Kosher, and EFfCI.

  • MS in Analytical Chemistry or higher with 2 years management experience
