The National Council on Aging, a national voice for every American’s right to age well, has an exciting opportunity for a Advocacy & Engagement Intern, in its Arlington, VA office.

The Advocacy & Engagement Intern will have an opportunity to utilize and expand their knowledge by working on several important projects, devising strategies and workplans. The Intern will report to the Director, Public Policy and Advocacy, and the Director, Community Partnerships & Network Activation.


Key responsibilities and learning opportunities include the following:

  • Establish strategy for 1-2 NCOA Public Policy priorities, leveraging relevant window(s) of opportunity.
  • Craft workplan, with timeline and various NCOA team responsibilities, for producing content to engage relevant audiences, to include website articles, social media messaging, calls to action, advocacy training resources, and webinar engagement. Assist with executing workplan with primary responsibility joint support and collaboration among the MarCom, Public Policy and Advocacy, Partnerships, and Research and Evaluation teams with:
    1. Supporting teams in the production and rollout of publications, including establishing production timelines and coordinating with team members
    2. Collaborating on content creation including blogs, press releases, social media, advocacy tools, and other resources
    3. Identifying and helping execute strategies for the development and cultivation of relationships vital to teams’ success
    4. Curating content and uploading blogs, press releases, and other resources (including SEO).
  • Provide recommendations for strategic use of FiscalNote platform, including VoterVoice, to build information and relationships with grassroots and grasstops, policymakers, and allies; execute advocacy campaigns; and report on NCOA Public Policy and Advocacy engagement outcomes.
  • Other duties as required.

Intern Capabilities/Competencies/Interests:

  • Able to work independently in a fast-paced environment after receiving assignments and under tight timelines and circle back with questions as needed.
  • Analytical, detail-oriented, and thorough.
  • Comfortable taking the initiative and reaching out to colleagues within NCOA and partners externally.
  • A current or recently graduated Master’s student seeking to build experience working in policy analysis, communications, grassroots advocacy or campaigns at a social services organization.
  • Passion for the mission, with understanding of the unique challenges at-risk and marginalized communities are confronting.
  • Strong persuasive writing skills and the ability to distill complex issues into simple, compelling messages.
  • Strong internal and external communication and project management skills, paired with cultural sensitivity and openness.
  • Excitement about continuous learning, trying new things, learning new issue areas quickly and being a member of a team.
  • Fluency in English, with the ability to write persuasive, compelling content.
  • Interest in policy and advocacy focused on social change, particularly related to equity across the life span, including older adults.

It's very helpful to have:

  • Past experience with WordPress or a similar content management system (CMS).
