Job Summary

The Mafu Lab, in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, is broadly interested in natural product biochemistry in both plants and fungi focusing on biosynthetic pathway elucidation, chemical biology and understanding the roles of metabolites in the biological system.

Under supervision of Dr. Sibongile Mafu, the prospective research fellow will participate in research and contribute to active projects in the lab in collaboration with current graduate students and staff. Enthusiastic applicants with an interest in plant metabolism are encouraged to apply.

Essential Functions

Examples of duties:

  • Perform research in the areas of molecular biology biochemistry and plant metabolism.

  • Collaborate actively with lab members in the research projects.

  • Active participation in all group meetings is required of all members.

  • Interact collegially with others in the laboratory, the Department, and elsewhere at the University.

  • Maintain laboratory equipment as needed.

  • Contribute to data analysis and write ups/papers on completed research in collaboration with professorial supervisor.

Other Functions

  • Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness.

  • Work in partnership with colleagues within the CNS community and across the campus to support the Dean's strategic priorities.

  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.

  • Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

    • Bachelor's or Masters' degree required in the field of Biochemistry, Chemistry or related field.

    • Excellent organizational skills and ability to follow protocols.

    • Excellent problem-solving skills including critical and analytical thinking.

    • Ability to thrive in a multidisciplinary, collaborative environment.

    • Experience with molecular biology techniques such as molecular cloning ( e.g Gibson, GoldenGate, ligation independent cloning), RNA isolation and handling, genetic transformation and/or gene editing) and biochemistry techniques (protein purification molecular cloning, transfection/transduction, protein expression and purification) analytical chemistry skills (GC-LC/MS and NMR).

    • Prior experience with molecular cloning, mass spectrometry or protein purification, would be highly competitive.

    Physical Demands/Working Conditions

    Ability to work in a lab environment.

    Work Schedule

    Monday- Friday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm; 40 hrs/week, 100 % FTE.

    Salary Information

    Salary will be commensurate with experience.
