Job Description Summary:

Clarkson University's Institute for a Sustainable Environment (ISE) seeks to appoint a Visiting Assistant Professor in Indigenous Studies to begin Fall 2021 or Spring 2022.

The search is open to applicants with a disciplinary focus associated with Indigenous American Studies. Candidates with strong records of engaged scholarship on environmental policy, especially in relation to land tenure and agrifood systems, will be at an advantage.Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate an ability to increase and develop institutional emphases and curricula in the study of Indigeneity and environmental sustainability.

The candidate will have academic capacities to engage in research supporting the convergent problems related to maintaining sustainable relationship with the environment, Indigenous sovereignty, and climate change.
In‐line with Clarkson University's recognition that it was founded and continues to thrive on traditional lands of the Kanienʼkehá꞉ka (Mohawk), an Indigenous nation within the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the candidate is encouraged to participate in the training of Indigenous students and professionals, and respectfully interact with Indigenous communities in this region. About the Academic Unit:

The ISE offers dynamic, innovative, and cross‐disciplinary undergraduate and graduate programs leading to Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees. Graduate programs (MSEnvironmental Policy, M.S. and PhD in Environmental Science & Engineering) offered through the Institute for a Sustainable Environment provide further strength and opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have a doctoral degree in anthropology, natural resource science, environmental policy, sustainability, or a related field.

  • They would have a demonstrated record of research excellence through high quality publications.

  • The successful candidate will have a commitment to research and the ability to develop independently and in collaboration, an externally‐funded, high quality research program; will be passionate about effective teaching in the area of Indigeneity or strong evidence of potential of teaching excellence; and will contribute effectively to the academic life of the Institute.

  • Synergy to establish collaborative research links with the existing members and affiliates of the ISE at the University is highly desirable.
