Summary of Duties:


The Chair will be an individual with outstanding academic credentials who can articulate and execute a clear, shared vision for leading and developing the Department, while promoting a broadly shared sense of collegiality, mutual respect, and support within the Department, college, and university. The successful candidate is expected to have a record of excellence in conducting and promoting undergraduate and graduate education. The successful candidate is expected to engage in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and may sustain an active research program complementary to existing Department and college strengths. The Chair's portfolio will include fiscal management of the Department, promoting professional development of faculty, staff, postdoctoral researchers, and undergraduate and graduate students statewide, engagement with faculty located at Research and Extension Centers, and participation in stakeholder meetings across the state.




The Opportunity:


The College of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resource Sciences (CAHNRS) at Washington State University seeks a distinguished academic leader to be Chair of the Department of Horticulture (https://horticulture.wsu.edu/). Applications are invited for a full-time, 12-month, tenure-eligible position at the rank of professor to begin June 1, 2022, or as negotiated, at the Pullman, WA campus. The position offers an exciting opportunity for leadership in developing new strategic initiatives and in further advancing established areas of departmental excellence in research, extension, and teaching. Members of the Department conduct research, teaching, and extension activities to train and inform students and stakeholders working in a wide range of horticultural crops that directly contribute more than $4 billion to the state economy. The mission of the Department is to develop and promote the adoption of biological discoveries and practical applications to increase productivity and sustainability of horticultural crops to benefit the state of Washington, nation, and world. This mission is accomplished via Department members' strengths in disciplines including breeding, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, biochemistry, physiology, and general horticulture.




The Department of Horticulture:


The Department is in the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences (CAHNRS, http://www.cahnrs.wsu.edu). The Department has fully integrated programs in teaching, research, and extension, involving approximately 19 faculty, 21 adjunct faculty, 14 research associates, and numerous administrative professionals and support staff statewide. The administrative office is located on the main campus in Pullman with approximately two thirds of the faculty located across branch campuses (http://www.tricity.wsu.edu) and four statewide Research and Extension Centers:





Degree Programs:


The Department contributes to the Viticulture & Enology program as well as administering the interdisciplinary Integrated Plant Sciences (IPS) undergraduate degree program through CAHNRS. Horticulture-based majors include: Fruit & Vegetable Management; Landscape, Nursery & Greenhouse Management; and Agricultural Biotechnology. The Department also participates in the interdisciplinary Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Food Systems (AFS) degree program. Fostering a transformative undergraduate experience in research and creative practice is a Departmental priority. The Department has a robust and growing graduate program with approximately 40 graduate students seeking degrees in Horticulture (MS and PhD) and interdisciplinary degrees in Molecular Plant Science (PhD) and Master of Science in Agriculture (MSAg) programs.

Required Qualifications:


A Ph.D. degree in a fundamental area of Plant Science or a related discipline. Demonstrated record of success in unit leadership and fiscal and personnel management in a department, program, or highly diverse scientific or academic unit
