Summary of Duties:
These positions are all in WSU's Veterinary Teaching Hospital and are considered clinical in nature as opposed to a laboratory environment. These position work with client owned animals. Individuals in these positions hold a Veterinary Technician Specialty (VTS) in specialty area and/or may supervise and coordinate daily work schedule and functions of technical staff for all services in assigned area. Provide veterinary technical support and assist during examination, diagnostic procedures, induction, anesthesia, surgery, and recovery of animals within assigned services. Assist with client communications related to general advice and recommendations, scheduling of appointments, receiving and discharge of patients, updates on patient status, provision of cost estimates for patient care, and triage of phone calls. Schedule appointments as needed or directed. Provide instruction to veterinary students, interns, and residents. Assist with other instructional tasks related to animal medicine and surgery.
Veterinary Specialist 3/Technician Vacancies:
This position will work in collaboration with the Veterinary Teaching Hospital's clinical anesthesiologists to coordinate patient anesthesia schedules, check pre-op work ups, administer pre-op and induction medications, intubate and maintain an appropriate level of sedation or anesthesia. This position will also be involved with venous and arterial catheterization, and patient instrumentation as appropriate for the procedure. At this level you will be expected to have the ability to manage an ASA 4 or 5 level case with minimal support and for this reason you will need to have acquired a Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) designation. Managing these cases means you will be working in conjunction with clinicians and students to handle technical problems related to the delivery of anesthesia to patients which may include but is not limited to addressing inappropriate anesthetic depths, changes to cardiovascular status, addressing cardiac arrhythmias, and trouble-shooting monitor or equipment issues. There will also be a significant amount of teaching and mentoring to the fourth year veterinary students. This position will work with both large and small animal patients and therefore must have experience with both. This position will oversee and be expected to complete medical records to maintain patient data essential for accurate anesthesia records as well as insure proper charge capture. This position will also be expected to perform various analgesic blocks such as epidurals, dental blocks and brachial plexus blocks. There will be occasional on-call responsibilities. The expected schedule for this position will depend on the needs of the unit. There are currently four (4) positions available; 2 day shift, 1 swing shift and 1 overnight shift.
Small Animal ICU-
This critical position works in collaboration with the ICU technician supervisor and doctors to help carry out compassionate care to the most critical of the Small Animal teaching hospital patients. As a VTS certified technician you will be expected to have mastery of the more advanced technical skills such as setting central lines and PICC lines, placing male and female urinary catheters, performing arterial blood draws, and managing chest tubes and feeding tubes and properly setting up a variety of constant rate infusions. This position will be involved with teaching and mentoring fourth year veterinary students, and occasionally guiding interns and residents. Successful candidates demonstrate an established knowledge base of common emergency and critical care case types, as well as organizational and multi-tasking abilities. Successful candidates will have safe handling skills, flexible attitude and a calm demeanor when working with patients.
Required Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree in a medical, biological, or allied field, and two years of applicable experience; or graduation from a two-year veterinary technician program, and two years of working experience with laboratory animals, at least six months must include experience directing the work of others; OR equivalent education/experience.
Must meet the required criteria (WAC 246-935-060) to be eligible to sit for the Washington State veterinary technician exam and must pass the exam the first time it is available.
Veterinary Technician Specialty (VTS) in specialty area.
Must pass WSU radiation safety training exam first time it is available.
Must be able to work on an occasional on-call schedule.
For supervisory positions, must have 3 years of experience in a leadership role in a clinical veterinary setting
Depending upon scheduling needs of the unit, evening, over-night and weekends shifts may be required.
Experience training and teaching students, interns and residents in specialty practice or academia.
Three (3) to five (5) years of experience with the care and treatment of animals in a veterinary practice
