The Machine Safety Engineer will provide machine safety expertise to corporate initiatives, capital projects and operating plants. The successful candidate will act as a technical lead and subject matter expert for machine risk assessment, functional safety for machinery, and machine safeguarding according to industry consensus standards (international and local). This person will work closely with other members of the Global Engineering group to develop and implement Dow internal guidelines and standards for machine safety. During capital project work and plant improvement projects, this person will ensure the consistent use of standards by the plants and project teams.

The preferred location for this role is Freeport, Texas. However other Dow manufacturing locations within North America, such as Midland, Plaquemine, Carrollton, Houston or Fort Saskatchewan, Canada will be considered.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Support Capital Projects and Plant Improvements by acting as the technical lead and Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Machine Risk Assessment (MRA), Functional Safety for Machinery, and Machine Safeguarding according to international and local industry consensus standards.

  • Develop work processes and specifications related to machinery safety such as Design/Engineering of Machinery Safeguards and Functional Safety Systems, Maintenance and Inspection programs, Testing and Auditing (including design verification and validation), Machinery and Safety Documentation, Standards Compliance, Machinery Safety Lifecycle for Project Execution

  • Leading teams and training as an authority on technical matters relating to machinery safety.

  • Utilize knowledge and experience in machine control system (electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and automation/controllers) and detailed controls schematics to evaluate machinery safety functions or reverse engineer designs and schematics from field inspection of the machinery controls when documentation is not available.

  • Work with remote team members from a diverse array of disciplines to utilizing a strong attention to detail to complete project work without direct, day-to-day supervision.

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree or relevant military experience at or above a U.S. E6 ranking OR Canadian Petty Officer 2nd Class ranking.

  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience (i.e. engineering, manufacturing or related)

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in Machine Safety and Machine Risk Assessment

  • Experience in evaluation, design, and implementation of Safety Functions (SRP-CS - Safety-related Parts of Control Systems) per ISO 13849-1 Performance Levels (PL) and Category architectures (including calculating PL using tools such as SISTEMA).

  • Experience leading and participating in Machine Risk Assessments with multi-disciplinary teams where participants have limited knowledge in machine safety.

  • Experience applying Industry Standards and regulations relevant to Machinery Safety & Functional Safety for Machinery (particularly ISO 13849-1 and ISO 13849-2).

  • A minimum requirement for this position is the ability to work legally in the United States or Canada on a permanent basis. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • External Credentials/Certifications: TÜV Rheinland "Functional Safety Engineer" for Machinery certification or equivalent (such as be TÜV NORD Certified Machine Safety Expert - CMSE or others)

  • Extensive knowledge in the following Industry Standards relevant to Machinery Safety & Functional Safety for Machinery: ANSI B11 series (B11.0, B11.19, B11.20), ANSI B20.1, NFPA 79, ANSI/RIA R15.06, IEC 60204-1, ISO 12100, IEC 62061, IEC 61508, ISO 13850, ISO 13855, ISO 13857, ISO 14118, ISO 14119, ISO 14120, and ISO 10218-1/-2.

  • Thorough understanding of machine safety regulations in geographies in addition to North America, e.g., Europe, Asia Pacific, etc. including directives such as the EU Machinery Directive.

  • Familiar with a wide range of commercially available machine safeguarding products & systems such as Safety Interlocks Switches/Sensors, Presence sensing devices (opto-electrical, pressure-sensitive, etc.), Safety relays (Safety Interface Modules) and Safety PLC's, Safety integrated Drives/Servos (e.g., with features such as Safe-Torque Off or Safe Speed/Position Monitoring), Safety rated Pneumatic/Hydraulic valves

  • Experience commissioning and troubleshooting safety functions and related control system interfaces - including programming logic solvers and display/operator interfaces such as PLC's, programmable safety relays, and HMI's (Human Machine Interfaces - computer screens/displays).
