The Director of Newsgathering runs the department, overseeing all editorial, managerial, and financial matters. As a senior leader, part of 24/7 LIVE network Newsy, the ideal candidate must have experience managing complex logistical operations. It will be essential for the Director of Newsgathering to contemporaneously mobilize and support multiple reporting teams, often on short notice, while ensuring the highest journalistic standards are met. The successful candidate effectively communicates assignment information from the Desk to all editorial departments.
What you'll do:
Maintains consistency and continuity between all newsgathering bureaus with an emphasis on:
Leading newsgathering efforts and guiding the teams with a clear vision and strategy
Ensuring highest standards of journalism and delivery of deadline-driven content as requested by all platforms
Editorially and logistically supporting all field teams
Prioritizing the safety of all crews on assignment
Coordinating Assignment Desk’s response to breaking news across the bureaus
Smooth and clear communication from the Desk to all other editorial departments
Establishing successful workflows with key clients
Experience in making judgments on matters of great sensitivity, as well as the ability to prioritize and interpret the key stories of the day
Financial management - acquisition of materials and assignment spending
The role collaborates closely with the Managing Editor and oversees the operations of the assignment desk, booking team, producers and hubbed videographers
This position reports to the Head of Newsy
What you'll bring
BA/BS degree and/or +10 years of related experience
Proven track record at a senior level in news and journalistic experience at the highest level, preferably in Newsgathering
Ability to solve problems, prioritize decisions, and successfully manage multiple assignments concurrently in a high-pressure environment
Proven experience in programming, ad sales and technical operations at a managerial level
Have broad understanding of master control technical operations and processes, satellite needs, and sales ops processes to plan new projects and troubleshoot when mistakes happen
Strong presentation skills, able to professionally represent Newsy at industry events and conferences
Field based experience, including field and package producing
Excellent communication, strong writing, and project management skills
Must be fluent in English
Willingness to travel with short notice and on weekends
Willingness to work flexible hours including overnights, weekends, holidays and/or last-minute scheduling changes in a 24/7 operation
Must be willing to work in Atlanta, Georgia
Ability to enterprise ideas and work well independently
Strong editorial judgment and understanding of journalistic ethics
Ability to multitask and work in a fast paced, deadline-driven environment
