Position Summary

Exercises independent discretion or judgment in handling uninsured motorist (UM) and/or underinsured motorist (UIM) claims. Also assists or acts on behalf of the claims supervisor when required.

Duties and Responsibilities

Establishes contact with Policyholders and claimants, and Attorneys. Conducts coverage investigations, liability investigations as needed and evaluates UM/UIM bodily injury claims. Makes recommendations on coverage and UM/UIM bodily injury values.

Sets and maintains reserves within designated authority.

Obtains recorded statements from Policyholders and Claimants to address liability and coverage concerns.

Reviews and analyzes extensive medical records when evaluating UM/UIM bodily injury claims. Negotiates settlements with Plaintiffs' Attorneys and unrepresented Policyholders and Claimants.

Handles litigated files wherein Erie Insurance is the named defendant. When necessary, attends depositions, arbitrations, mediations, court proceedings and trials. Out of state travel is sometimes required. Works closely with defense counsel during the litigation process. Makes recommendations to the Supervisor and Home Office Examiner on how to proceed.

Identifies subrogation opportunities and assigns claim to the Subrogation Department.

Documents claim files accordingly and submits final report for file closures.

Assists Supervisor and Home Office Examiner with the reformation of coverage process.

Stays current with case law to ensure the proper interpretation of coverage and the evaluation of UM/UIM bodily injury claims.

Assists Claims Supervisor or acts on his/her behalf when necessary.

Completes industry-related training programs and continues to attend training programs to remain informed on policy changes, interpretation or new legislation. Assists in training of new UM/UIM Claims Adjusters.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor's degree or its equivalent preferred. Four to six years prior experience handling liability claims preferred; bodily injury preferred. Successful completion of the Associate in Claims (AIC) program preferred. Valid driver's license and good driving record required.
