Position Summary:

The Associate EHS Specialist is responsible for supporting the planning, implementation and monitoring of Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) programs and policies for the Illumina San Diego facilities and operations to ensure compliance with US-based and local EHS regulations, while helping us build a best-in-class EHS function.  The vision for Illumina is that every Illumina employee will be a leader in EHS.  The Associate EHS Specialist will play a role in helping Illumina to achieve this vision through high engagement and empowerment with our employees.       

Responsibilities:


  • Lead coordination of general EHS program activities among the San Diego-California facilities and operations.  

  • Manage general EHS programs across site and within functional area of support including but not limited to, process risk assessments, emergency response, environmental initiatives, safety committees, etc.

  • Support primary functional areas of distribution, R&D laboratories in partnership with area owners and support teams.

  • Support continuous improvement for EHS related matters including EHS software systems.

  • Building partnerships and liaising with all levels of site personnel, suppliers and vendors – monitoring, providing support, advice, and expertise to operational teams at all levels.

  • Organizing and conducting risk assessments as required, identifying, and tracking corrective and preventive actions, and ensuring they meet legal requirements.

  • Manage and maintain other EHS administrative duties including EHS records, inspection forms, permits, checklists, training, and other other required documentation to support EHS compliance.

  • Track and report data that drives EHS performance metrics including incident management, risk assessment, compliance, and EHS programs.

  • Assist with site chemical purchase review and approval process.

  • Assist in medical record management, workers compensation, and medical surveillance.

  • Assist with EHS process for onboarding and routing of new equipment.

  • Managing EHS financial and administrative requirements including Purchase Order/Invoice reconciliation, working closely with Manager on budget tracking and reporting.

  • EHS services contract management and coordination.

  • General support of EHS Management System (EHS-MS) activities.

  • Support root-cause analysis and investigations and coordinating/ implementing corrective measures.

  • Carrying out EHS inspections and manage the inspection program.

  • Coordinating, supporting, and conducting training as appropriate.

  • Presentations to internal customers, teams as required.

  • Promoting and supporting the health, safety, environment and culture.

  • Works on problems of limited scope. Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data from which answers can be readily obtained. Builds stable working relationships internally.

Requirements:


  • Experience of working in regulated/scientific environment advantageous.

  • Knowledge of risk assessments and implementing and maintaining EHS programs.

  • Ability and willingness to research and learn about EHS regulations and help support compliance.

  • Strong organizational and communication skills are essential.

  • Strong teamwork skills across a team operating regionally and globally

  • Energetic and positive enthusiasm disposition

  • Experience working in fast paced and dynamic environment with fast global business growth

  • Ability to prioritize and execute work among competing priorities

  • Excellent IT/computer skills including but not limited to Microsoft suite, Adobe Acrobat, etc.

  • Occasional travel may be required.

Experience/Education:

  • Typically requires an associate degree in and EHS related discipline.
