The Mechanical Design Engineer II position supports and leads the design and development of innovative new products within the Medtronic Diabetes Business Unit. Your new role will have you reporting to the Northridge, CA campus.

In this role, you will be responsible for leading and supporting design concepts or changes that are primarily mechanical in nature. Engineering support may be independent or under the direction of a lead engineer and/or project manager. The key to being successful in this job is the ability to multi-task, work effectively cross functionally, drive projects to closure within specified milestones and be flexible on project assignments.

The person filling this role will become part of a dynamic and fast paced R&D group with a strong history of successful product development. They will have the opportunity to interface with various functional groups within the diabetes business unit to develop user centered products.

A Day in the Life


  • Collaborate with cross-functional (R&D, marketing, and management) teams to translate project goals into relevant design solutions. Develop product concepts to solve user needs.

  • Design components to be manufactured via plastic injection molding, stamping, machining, extrusion, and related processes. Work with manufacturing to consider high volume assembly processes in design concepts.

  • Construct prototype devices for engineering testing and in-vitro/in-vivo studies including animal studies and human feasibility studies.

  • Help develop specifications, test methodologies, and test equipment to evaluate design concepts.

  • Perform physical testing on engineering prototypes. Help ensure designs meet and exceed product specifications, regulatory requirements, and international standards.

  • Prepare documentation to support development activities. Create and release engineering drawings. Process engineering change orders.

  • Work with suppliers to ensure components meet design requirements & diagnose design problems.

  • Present technical findings or project status to cross functional teams and management through meeting minutes, design reviews, presentations, and other means of communication.

  • Production support with respect to testing methods; device specification and yield problems; analysis of customer returns; and supplier related engineering changes.

  • Grow and maintain technical knowledge current with advancing technology related to product development of diabetes devices and accessories.

  • Travel < 25 % of the time

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or relevant science discipline and 2+ years of experience in medical device design and development

OR

Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or relevant science discipline with 0+ years of experience in medical device design and development.

Nice to Have


  • 2+ years of experience in medical device design and development

  • Experience in SolidWorks or similar CAD software for mechanical design, analysis, and documentation.

  • Experience with physical testing of mechanical systems/components and failure analysis to determine root cause of failures.

  • Familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance (GD&T) practices per ASME Y14.5-2009

  • Experience designing and developing assembly processes for mechanical and electromechanical assemblies

  • Extensive knowledge in analyzing and solving problems in a disciplined fashion, ensuring clear understanding of the root cause(s) and efficient recommendations for resolution

  • Must be self-motivated and able to multi-task, meet tight deadlines and prioritize changing demands in a fast-paced environment

  • Energetic, enthusiastic, and enjoys the challenge of user centered design
