Johnson Controls has a great opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer of Global Test Labs Engineering. We prefer to have this resource be driving distance to any of the following locations: Milwaukee, WI, New Freedom, Pa, or Wichita, KS.

What you will do

The Mechanical Engineer performs detailed engineering work including evaluation of existing systems, analysis of data, calculations, preparation of drawings, specifications, and reports for the design, development, construction, commissioning, and maintenance for all the mechanical, refrigeration, and process (MRP) elements required for Global HVAC test facilities. This position provides engineering and technical leadership for projects, interacts with other departments to facilitate project completion, and analyzes engineering results and redirects resources and activities as required.

They will also develop conceptual designs and cost estimates for related MRP project elements during budgeting and initial project phases and provide cost-benefit analysis for various project alternatives and negotiate with suppliers for best cost and value.

How you will do it

  • Control expenditures within limitations of approved project budgets. Develop project schedules for all significant initiatives and create a culture to hit schedule milestones, to ensure on-cost and on-time delivery of lab initiatives with world class quality.  Responsible to manage critical path tasks for all mechanical elements of assigned projects and execute capital equipment projects within the engineering labs.

  • Prepares final designs including drawings, requests for quote (RFQs), bills of material (BOMs), and construction specifications. Responds to contractor and engineering requests-for-information (RFIs).

  • Coordinates with electrical, controls, process, and other engineering disciplines to facilitate state-of-the-art designs for complete HVAC test facility projects.

  • Creates refrigeration and process system designs and develops piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) for projects that simulate precise and extreme environmental conditions including temperature, humidity, snow, air flow, liquid flow, and high-pressure vapor flow.

  • Reviews project designs for compliance with applicable national and local codes, engineering principles, industry best practices, company standards and related specifications.

  • Plans and conducts on-site startup, troubleshooting, adjusting/tuning, testing, and commissioning of MRP systems for HVAC test facility projects.

  • Maintains current knowledge of all factors and conditions which may affect assigned engineering work.

  • Operate in compliance with JCI safety, quality, confidentiality, and ethics policies, including completion of recurring on-line training modules. 

What we look for

Required


  • Bachelor of Science Degree Mechanical Engineering from ABET accredited university

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience with mechanical engineering design in the HVAC industry or Industrial Controls system industry

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Windows operating environment, including e-mail and Microsoft Office software; and AutoCAD or equivalent engineering document preparation.

  • Experience with domestic and international compliance bodies governing HVAC laboratory facilities.

  • Able to travel within U.S. and internationally up to 30% of normal workdays.

Preferred


  • Technical Committee membership in a related professional organization.

  • Test facility design experience including heavy machinery.

  • Working knowledge of LabVIEW and related Lab software.

  • Master’s Degree and/or PE registration.
