The Director of Underwriting I is a leadership position that works side-by-side with the Regional VP Underwriting to ensure exceptional results. Works along with Vice President on the Underwriting strategic direction and ensures consistent application of underwriting philosophy and process throughout the region. The Director I manages a team of Underwriting Supervisors and/or staff, seasoned to entry level, providing leadership, direction, performance coaching and development to the team in all technical, operational and performance aspects. This position will provide technical underwriting leadership to the regional underwriting operations in support of the company's operational and financial objectives. The role is responsible for oversight of the underwriting operations in the absence of the Vice President.

  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    30% With Underwriting management, ensures the achievement of continued profitability, growth and/or operational efficiencies for line of business through assessment of risk tolerance, market appetite and emerging risk issues.

    • Prospects new business targets; develops strategies to procure new business

    • Forms and develops new relationships as well as maintains and strengthens existing relationships with agents operating in designated region

    • Creates and reviews underwriting reports regarding key underwriting management and performance measures.

    • Participates in policyholder meetings for new and renewal business.

    • Reviews workflows, processes and procedures for continuous improvement.

    • Performs account coordination activities with other departments when needed.

    25% Responsible for compliance within scope of role and responsibilities and where/when needed.

    • May perform internal quality control audits and manages staff for internal and external audits.

    • Coordinates file reviews and preparation for reinsurance, state and internal audits.

    • Ensures compliance with individual state requirements and policies and procedures

    30% Lead and manage the underwriting team for assigned line of business by overseeing and evaluating new and renewal business to ensure risk quality and proper insurance to value

    • Ensure team member performance follows industry standards and internal requirements.

    • Provides technical direction and guidance to underwriting staff and managers on accounts.

    • Ensures the application of underwriting management procedures and strategies.

    • Evaluates personnel for underwriting authority and insures they are in compliance with those authority levels.

    • Recruits and supervises underwriting staff.

    • Monitors authority levels for underwriting staff.

    • Guides, mentors and coaches staff on assigned accounts.

    • Provides training to staff and identifies staff development opportunities.

    15% Performs special projects as directed by management.

    • Participates in work groups on policy forms, special coverage

    • Develops, manages and monitors budget.

    • Bachelor's degree in Insurance, Business or related field, with a minimum of five years of experience in professional liability underwriting, or Associates degree or equivalent with at least eight years' experience.

    • Minimum of three years' experience managing a team of professionals.

    • Working knowledge of the insurance industry.

    • Must be available to travel up to 20% of the time.

    • Strong management, written and verbal communication and problem-solving skills

    • Completion toward CPCU, RPLU or other relative insurance or professional designations desired.

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

    • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
