Staff Development Engineer - Silicon Nanophotonics at Illumina, Inc. in Hayward, California

Job Description:

SUMMARY:

The Silicon Nanophotonics Engineer is part of the Illumina R&D team creating new industry-leading genetic analysis platforms for life sciences and clinical markets.  In this position, you will be responsible for the design and fabrication of micro and nanometer scale photonics devices and the integration into these instruments. The job includes working closely with design houses and semiconductor foundry partners to implement novel design concepts and optimize fabrication processes and workflow.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
 


  • Work with a cross-disciplinary development team to define, design, develop, test and validate new and/or current integrated genetic analysis platforms

  • Work with chemistry, instrument and informatics teams to translate system-level specifications to micro and nanometer scale photonic device requirements

  • Participates in identifying new technologies and leads technical execution

  • Work with external design houses on device design and oversee the development

  • Interface with foundries and other suppliers to bring silicon photonics devices from concept, prototype to production

  • Develop and implement a complete silicon photonics device characterization program, from device characterization to system level validation

  • Troubleshoot highly complex system problems down to device physics level

  • Mentor others in areas of technical development, problem solving

 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
 

  • Deep understanding of near field optics, physical principle of micrometer and nanometer scale silicon photonic devices

  • Strong modeling skills using design and modeling tool, such as BPM, FDTD, etc.

  • Solid understanding of CMOS devices and semiconductor fabrication processes

  • Hands-on experience in the fabrication and characterization of MEMS and nanophotonic devices and processing data for statistical analysis

  • Strong interdepartmental communication skills required

  • Collaborates, builds relationships and influences team members to work toward common goals

  • Excellent written and oral communication and experienced presentation skills

 
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
 

  • Ph. D. in Physics, Materials Science, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering

  • 8+ (or equivalent) years of experience in silicon photonics device design and/or product engineering, biomedical application experience preferred

  • Experience working with 3rd party design houses, foundries, assembly, test and reliability houses

  • Experience designing or over-seeing the design and characterization of photonic devices

  • Experience with MEMS, biomedical equipment & devices, lab-on-chip
