Pharmacy Technician

The Pharmacy Technician assists pharmacists in providing effective, appropriate, and safe pharmacy services. Provides friendly and cooperative customer service. Enters patient data accurately. Answers telephones quickly and with courtesy. The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for the overall coordination and processing of new patient medication orders and reorders. This individual ensures that orders are processed in a timely manner and meet all financial and clinical requirements prior to fulfillment.

Job Responsibilities/Duties


  • Maintain accurate and complete patient records.
  • Enter prescriptions accurately into computer and have Pharmacist verify correctness of the prescription entry.
  • Select drugs from stock, count, package and accurately label prescriptions for Pharmacist verification and shipment.
  • Inform the Pharmacist of any alerts form the pharmacy system, such as contraindications, interactions, and allergies.
  • Contact physician regarding needed refill requests.
  • Respond to inbound Pharmacy calls, demonstrating customer service excellence, and triage to appropriate clinician; communicate with patients, prescribers' offices, and associates with a focus on patient care.
  • Enter and maintain non-preferred drug requests in the prior authorization system, if applicable.
  • Contact insurance companies or other payers to complete prior authorization requirements, identify co-pay structure, and investigate coverage and benefits.
  • Provide information and respond to requests to assist to obtain co-pay cards or financial assistance for patients, as applicable.
  • Assist in inventory control such as auditing receipt of goods, inventorying, stocking, pricing, monitoring usage, and correcting pricing and quantities in the computer.
  • Package and ship orders as needed.
  • Assist in maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of the pharmacy.
  • Participate in pharmacy orientation programs, training programs for Pharmacy Technicians, pharmacy staff meetings, in-service educational programs and other functions as required by the facility and pharmacy department. Complete required training, as assigned, within the established timeframes. Maintains regular attendance according to established policies.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Education: None.

Minimum Experience: A minimum of 2 years of prior pharmacy tech experience in a retail or specialty pharmacy setting. Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Outpatient pharmacy systems. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong organization skills and ability to prioritize daily tasks. Ability to maintain member confidentiality and protect operations by keeping confidential information in compliance with HIPAA requirements.

Req. Certification/Licensure: Current PTCB/State of CA Pharmacy Tech License is required.
