Position Summary



The Composite Operator fabricates and assembles composite parts in the following areas: Gerber, layup, infusion/injecting, curing, post-operations (bonding, deflash, trimming, drilling, sanding and painting) of composites. The technician performs all duties in compliance with MSP ME-001 to establish controls and responsibilities relative to maintaining a suitable environment for the fabrication of composite structures.

This position requires use of information which is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR. ITAR defines a U.S. person as a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.


Essential Responsibilities



All layup composite operators are trained on specific program parts using the Stationized Work Order (SWO) to develop their competencies:

  • Cuts fiberglass or carbon material to size, following templates or drawings, using approved cutting tools such as scissors or knives.
  • Marks identifying information on material and assembles material in kits for subsequent laminating.
  • Applies layers of dry or impregnated cloth onto mold or fixture in pre-determined ply sequence and presses cloth to fit contours of mold, smooth surface, and remove air pockets and excess resin using squeegee, scraper, spatula, and/or other tools.
  • Fits and joins the ends of cloth accurately using approved cutting tools. Encases molded laminates and as appropriate (per the SWO) release materials, bagging material and bleeder cloth and prepares for cure by attaching the vacuum bagging apparatus such as thermocouples, probes and vacuum connections to mold and exhausts air from vacuum bag to seal laminate for curing.
  • Tests seal on vacuum bagging apparatus using leak detector.
  • Trims, drills, grind, sands, and finishes cured parts to specifications using templates, fixtures, hand tools, and/or power tools. Pre-fits and assembles cured parts into assemblies or subassemblies using jigs, fixtures, power tools, and/or fasteners.
  • Assures that completed work complies with FAA regulations (if applicable), customer requirements and/or company specifications.
  • Keep scrap materials at minimum levels; keep assigned areas clean and effective.
  • Participate in Lean Manufacturing initiatives with specific concentration on 5S.
  • Commits to quality objectives and certifications.
  • Follow all OSHA and company safety and environmental regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned


Position Requirements


  • Education: Minimum of High School Diploma or GED.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 yrs Composite manufacturing experience
  • Essential Skills: Ability to read and understand detailed work orders, engineering process instructions and drawings.
  • Computer Skills: Basic computer skills including MS Office.
  • Communication skills: Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Organization: Ability to be highly organized, detail oriented and able to respond to change quickly.
  • Safety Related: Must be able to become certified to wear a respirator.
