Laboratory Manager - Full Time, Days (Culver City)

The Laboratory Manager has 24/7 leadership responsibility of the daily operations of the department including, clinical, staffing, quality, and financial management. Ensures compliance with performance improvement processes and all regulatory bodies. Ensures an effective laboratory practice that is compliant and consistent with standards of practice. Implements strategies, processes, and standards to ensure operations support the key organizational and departmental initiatives such as quality of care and patient safety. Promotes collegial relationships between the unit and other departments or disciplines across the hospital. Responsible for employee coaching, training, hiring, counseling/discipline, performance assessment and payroll processes.

Job Responsibilities/Duties


  • Manages the daily operations of the laboratory services department. Demonstrates advanced level of laboratory expertise, strong leadership and collaborative skills in dealing with staff and members of the healthcare team. Consistently ensures practice is within scope of licensure and compliant with hospital wide standards of laboratory services. Ensures institutional compliance with professional, accrediting and regulatory standards of care. Ensures Infection Control procedures and HIPAA compliance.
  • Ensures appropriate staffing levels. Oversees contract labor/services, including appropriate credentialing, orientation and evaluation. Responsible for scheduling/staffing, coaching, training, hiring, firing, counseling, performance evaluations and competencies, and payroll process. Effectively manages staff in compliance with applicable regulatory bodies, and all established policies, procedures and legal guidelines.
  • Collaborates with staff and members of the healthcare team, ensuring the coordination of care between other disciplines and support staff. Delegates laboratory activities to appropriate members of the healthcare team, provides effective leadership and ensures that service is safe and of high quality. Acts as a source of information and articulately responds to questions, providing resources, guidance, and education about laboratory services.
  • Empathizes with patient and patient support systems, expresses compassion and understanding for the situation and demonstrates care which is appropriate for the age, and cultural, religious, gender identity, or ethnic background. Engages in caring behaviors, taking conscious ownership for work and takes deliberate/thoughtful actions regarding how to best carry out interactions with the patient, families, physicians, and co-workers.
  • Ensures department performance, quality, and process improvement. Ensures turnaround time (TAT) for STAT and routine tests meets established guidelines. Oversees laboratory quality control policies; documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed. Appropriately educates and mentors. Demonstrates problem-solving, critical thinking, and prioritization of work to resolve issues as they arise in an appropriate and timely manner.

Qualifications

Minimum Education: Masters Degree preferred.

Minimum Experience: Seven (7) years' experience as CLS with a minimum of two (2) years' in a leadership role required. Strong time management skills and ability to effectively prioritize task. Ability to identify and distinguish between colors. Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.

Req. Certification/Licensure: Current Licensure as a Clinical Lab Scientist in the State of California required. Hospital Fire and Life Safety Card (Los Angeles City Employees only) required.
