Senior Civil Engineer - Construction at Michael Baker International in Madison, Wisconsin

DESCRIPTION

Michael Baker International is seeking a Civil Engineer III to join our Construction Services team. With offices in Madison and Milwaukee and projects throughout the state, the successful candidate will work under the direction of the Construction Services Manager on inspection projects throughout Wisconsin. The Civil Engineer - Construction will monitor and document that the highway, roadway, and/or bridge project is built in accordance with the plans and specifications. They will perform testing and inspection services on road and bridge projects for WisDOT and other local public agency clients, providing supervision of multiple inspectors on larger projects. Between field assignments, this position may involve design tasks such as constructability reviews of plans for upcoming projects as well as assisting the Construction Services Manager with the preparation of Letters of Interest for upcoming proposals, communicating with clients about staffing needs, and tracking progress on current projects.


  • Review plans and specifications associated with assigned work on active construction contracts and notify client of apparent constructability issues or errors in plans
  • Oversee daily operations of contractor or subcontractor personnel to ensure that work is being performed in accordance with plans and specifications, and provide field direction to Michael Baker inspection staff assigned to the project
  • Answer detailed contractor questions about plan and specification requirements
  • Identify contractor means and methods that are inconsistent with plans and specifications, and discuss needed changes with the contractor as well as the client
  • Make measurements and observations of work being performed to ensure accurate quantities are tracked for completed work
  • Prepare detailed field drawings or electronic templates to support the calculations being used to justify the pay quantities
  • Monitor material testing needs, and/or take material tests associated with work being performed including testings concrete for yield, slump, and air content, or testing soils or aggregates for moisture and density
  • Understand and apply testing frequencies for various materials used on the contract to ensure that enough tests are being taken to cover the work performed
  • Electronically document pay quantities, material requirements, and contractor staff in a daily work report

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS


  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field
  • 8+ years of related engineering experience
  • P.E. license (in pursuit or passed)
  • Proficiency with roadway design software, CAD (MicroStation & AutoCAD), and Microsoft Office
  • Familiarity with construction materials, methods, and processes
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
  • Working experience with WisDOT is preferred
  • Highway Technician Certification Program (HTCP) certifications are preferred
  • Proficiency in organization and presentation of documentation
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Strong written/verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly

COMPENSATION
The salary range for this position is $82,804 - $172,523. This will be dependent on the experience and expertise of the incoming candidate.
