Center for Clinical Laboratory Science and Pandemic Research

CLIA Lab Associate Director

As a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Kean University has established a new interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Laboratory Science and Pandemic Research (CLSPR or Center) with a broad mission to help create and sustain a preeminent, nationally recognized program of education and research in clinical diagnostics and pandemic research. Within the Center, a CLIA-certified clinical diagnostic laboratory opened in December 2020 in partnership with Union County, NJ. This laboratory is located in the STEM building on the Union campus. A full-time Associate Director is being sought to oversee laboratory operations and the long-term expansion of its diagnostic services and research program. The University is seeking an Associate Director, but with appropriate qualifications, a successful candidate may be considered for the role of CLIA Lab Director. The relevant qualifications for CLIA Lab Director are listed in Chapter 45 of NJ State Board of Medical Examiners Law (N.J.S.A. 45:9-42.7) as well as Subchapter 2 of Chapter 44, Chapter IV of the State Sanitary Code.

Under the direct supervision of the Executive Director of the Center and the supervision of the Medical Director of the CLIA-certified Kean Diagnostic Laboratory (KDL), the CLIA Lab Associate Director is responsible for coordinating day-to-day operations of the facility, including all aspects of organization, planning, evaluation and management of technical staff. As a member of the core management team in the New Jersey Center for Science, Technology and Mathematics, the CLIA Lab Associate Director will work with the Executive Director of CLSPR and the Medical Director of the KDL to provide support and leadership for the KDL Lab. The Associate Director will also support the overall mission of CLSPR's academic/research programs in molecular diagnostics. The CLIA Lab Associate Director will also promote the growth and expansion of KDL testing services and the R&D of novel clinical diagnostic tests.

The Associate Director will ensure that: 1) the laboratory provides quality services in all aspects (i.e., pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic phases) of diagnostic test performance; 2) the physical and environmental systems in the laboratory are maintained and that employees are safe from physical, chemical and biological hazards from day-to-day; and 3) a continuous quality control, assurance and improvement program for all clinical testing products is developed and implemented on a routine basis. The opportunity to teach courses related to subject areas of expertise may also be available. This position requires travel and a flexible schedule including evening and weekend hours.

Qualifications: A terminal degree (e.g., Ph.D., Sc.D., M.D., D.O., D.D.S.) is required in a relevant field of chemical, physical, biological, medical or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution and three years of experience working in a clinical laboratory, with at least two years of that experience being in a supervisory capacity is required. A combination of equivalent education and experience may be determined by the university. Preferred qualifications include: a minimum of five years of experience in a clinical laboratory; experience that leads toward qualifying for certification as a High-complexity Clinical Laboratory Director (HCLD) including New Jersey Certification Standards for HCLD; experience with COVID-19 testing workflows; and clinical laboratory discipline(s) of molecular diagnostics, microbiology, chemistry and/or public health microbiology. Certifications are a plus, including those by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG), the American Board of Pathology (ABP) or the American Board of Clinical Chemistry (ABCC). Teaching experience at the post-secondary level is highly desirable.

Candidacy review begins immediately and continues until appointment is made. Please submit your cover letter, resume/CV and contact information for three professional references. Official transcripts are required prior to the starting date of employment.
