Job Description


Our team designs and builds the embedded software platform for next-generation surgical robotic systems. We're looking for a high energy, talented, engineer to contribute broadly to the embedded software stack.

Your Role:


You'll be joining the team responsible for developing several generations of our flagship product, the daVinci Xi, to develop new surgical robotic systems. You'll have the opportunity and responsibility to own development of your features, end to end. From concept to cross functional requirements gathering, to implementation, test and verification, success is in your hands.


You will be programming C++ systems software on microcontrollers deeply embedded in the robotic system but, you are in your heart, an integrator. Collaboration comes naturally to you which will help you develop robust solutions to complex problems and share them with other new product development engineering teams.




Your Responsibilities:



  • In your first year in this role, you will contribute broadly to many areas of software development, including but not limited to:

    • Enhance reliability and robustness of the distributed, inter-processor communication network, OSI level 4+.

    • Design and implement ad hoc network discovery frameworks to identify nodes and services across the robotic system

    • Record and steam telemetry data to highlight performance and bottlenecks, identifying areas of opportunity



  • Design and develop product-focused, rock-solid, C++ software in a heterogeneous, multi-processor SoC/FPGA/real-time-embedded environment

  • Work on a cross-functional team to develop technical specifications and evaluate design trade-offs

  • Perform formal risk analysis, develop software mitigations, run V&V and participate in design transfer to manufacturing activities.



Qualifications



Required Expertise:



  • A natural communicator with high attention to detail

  • Possess a commitment to the highest product quality

  • Passionate about developing cross-platform, object-oriented C++ code

  • Proven ability to proactively engage with the unknown/unfamiliar, learn how things work and apply that learning to new challenges.

  • Experience working on product-focused designs in a team environment

  • Minimum 3 years industry experience developing and supporting embedded systems

  • Bachelors or Masters' degree in Software/Computer Engineering

  • Experience with designing software products in an FDA or other regulated industry or for mission critical applications; comfort with concepts of design input, design output, traceability, and risk analysis, and mitigations
