Reliable Process Engineer (Vacuum and Spray)

Position Summary:    The Process Engineer is responsible for utilizing sound engineering practices to troubleshoot and resolve process issues, acting as a process expert for internal and external customers and implementing systemic improvement efforts to enhance quality and reduce production costs.

Primary Areas of Responsibility: The successful candidate will provide Engineering support for Hohman’s Vacuum, Dry Film Lubricant/Spray and Primer Departments. He/she develops and drives manufacturing process improvements by analyzing the process data/test results and drives strategies aimed at operating the most efficient manufacturing methods for applying thin film coatings via physical vapor deposition (PVD) and/or spray application of resin bonded dry film lubricants and adhesive bonding primers.  PVD processes include cathodic arc deposition, DC sputtering of MoS2 lubricants, and ion plating of metals.

Key performance objectives in order of priority are:


  1. Utilizes sound engineering practices to quickly resolve process issues on the production floor and minimize downtime.

  2. Drive and implement continuous improvement efforts to improve operational efficiency and manufacturing consistency.

  3. Provide process expertise to internal and external customers to utilize and expand the intellectual property of the business.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The responsibilities listed are fundamental to the position and must be performed successfully to achieve the key performance objectives of the role.  Other responsibilities may be assigned.

Interpersonal Responsibilities:


  1. Acts as a mentor to train and develop capable, independent Co-Ops, Chemical Analysts, and Process/Engineering Technicians.

  2. Serves as a technical resource for customers and internal stakeholders to implement new processes and resolve production related issues.

  3. Provides guidance and direction to Process Engineering Technicians and Co-ops to ensure on-time completion of assigned tasks. 

  4. Provides ongoing technical assistance and training on hardware processing to the Production Operators.

Operational Responsibilities:


  1. Assists in evaluating project feasibility and alignment with Hohman capabilities; coordinates conceptual production processes to validate/reject feasibility.

  2. Utilizes Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA) to assess the reliability, safety, performance and risk of new processes; determines likelihood of risk mitigation based on analysis.

  3. Drives production process implementation and manages the transition into production to drive timely processing and project completion; troubleshoots technical and process related issues as needed.

  4. Troubleshoots and conducts root cause analysis of project, production and chemical bath process related issues to minimize production downtime; ensures the Production Manager is kept abreast of progress and aware of process changes.

  5. May be point of Contact to internal and external customers for Quality related problem definition, resolution, loss reporting and continuous improvement

  6. Identifies continuous improvement opportunities through trend analysis of quality performance data and implements continuous improvement projects.

  7. May review industry and customer technical specifications/documentation for compliance. Performs gap analysis to identify areas of systems requiring improvement to maintain compliance and implements required systemic changes to achieve compliance

Education, Training and/or Experience
 


  • B.S. Degree in Engineering (or Related Technical Field)

  • 3+ years of related experience & training preferred

  • Results-oriented with process ownership commitment and ability to prioritize

  • Demonstrated proficiency with problem solving tools: 5 Whys, Is / Is Not, Pareto Diagrams, Design of Experiments, FMEA

  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret specifications, prints and other technical documents
