Serving the people of Southwestern Alaska, the Yukon-Kuskokwim Hospital is a 50-bed general acute care medical facility. Fully accredited by JCAHO, services include adult med/surg, pediatrics, obstetrics, emergency room, as well as outpatient family medicine clinics, pharmacy, lab, and imaging.



Position Summary:



The Exercise Physiologist will provide exercise testing, exercise prescription and health education as a member of the Diabetes Prevention and Control team. To advance understanding of physical activity's importance in disease prevention and management, the Exercise Physiologist will work closely with care providers, case managers and outreach specialists to help customers use exercise to slow, stop or reverse diabetes and related chronic diseases. The EP will provide services and education through the YKHC Wellness Center and regular village travel. The evolving duties of this position will be in line with YKHC Napartet Strategies and contribute to the mission of health promotion and disease prevention in the region.



Position Qualifications:



  • Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree in Exercise Physiology or Exercise Science required. Master's degree preferred. Candidate must hold EPC board certification.

  • Minimum Experience New graduates with EPC board certification accepted.

  • Two (2) years' experience in patient education and case management preferred. Background in Diabetes and/or Cardiovascular Disease preferred.

  • License, Certification, Registration: Exercise Physiologist by degree listed on ASEP- EP Registry,

  • Valid Driver's License and CPR certified and attain CDE certification within 12 months of hire.

  • Equipment/Tools: Work in a typical office, hospital, and village clinic setting. Comprehensive knowledge of PC computers, metabolic analyzer, and other testing equipment. Ability to operate diabetes care medical equipment such as glucometer, ht./weight scale, etc.

  • May require some travel to villages via small plane/sub-arctic conditions, moderate lifting of equipment, occasional long working hours, evenings, and weekends.

  • Specialized Knowledge and Skills

    • Strong knowledge base in prevention of chronic diseases and conditions attributed to same (obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease)

    • Point of care testing: exercise testing, metabolic testing, exercise prescription

    • Knowledge of educational principles of adult learning theory, behavior change concepts, empowerment models, motivational interviewing techniques, learning styles and teaching strategies.

    • Knowledge of working in Alaska Native/American Indian communities.



  • Supervisory Responsibilities: None required.
