The Transportation and Parking unit of the Division of Facilities and Services at West Virginia University is seeking applications for a PRT Guideway Technician. The PRT Guideway Technician helps to maintain the PRT’s safe and reliable transportation to WVU students. faculty, staff, visitors, and the community of the Morgantown area, with 5 passenger stations, 8+ miles of main guideway (GW) structure and two maintenance facilities. The GW systems include mechanical, structural, and electrical systems along its entire length, requiring regular preventive maintenance and repairs. The most maintenance intensive of these systems is the Guideway Heating System (GWHS), consisting of four (4) separate hydronic heating plants that utilize a heated glycol solution and embedded piping grids to heat the GW running surface.  This allows for safe vehicle operation in the winter months.  This position will be responsible for the proper operation, maintenance, and repairs of these systems.

What you'll do:


  • Perform a wide variety of tasks that involve installation, repair, maintenance and cleaning of the guideway systems. 

  • Provide daily guideway heating status information, input for work plans and guideway heating system repairs and modifications. 

  • Perform field maintenance and operations efforts for the MPRT guideway heating system and associated structures. 

  • Provide continual inspection of guideway systems to ensure maintenance is completed on schedule, recommends repair actions.

  • Work unsupervised and make independent decisions in real time. 

  • Ensure that proper safety procedures, equipment, and personal protective equipment are used while performing job duties.

  • Utilize various computer programs such as: WVU time clock system, email, Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, File Explorer, etc.), and Adobe Acrobat (for viewing PDF documents and drawings).

  • Assist with requisitions for parts, supplies, etc. from PRT Stores and WVU procurement, and has direct contact with material vendors and service agencies.

  • Be responsible for tools and equipment utilized in the performance of duties., and shall leave all work areas in a safe, neat, and orderly manner.

  • Interpret blueprints and material/performance specifications.

  • May be required to move, load, and carry materials and equipment necessary to complete all phases of assigned maintenance and repair duties.

  • Responsible for communicating guideway heating system leaks to PRT management and WVU’s Environmental Health and Safety department (EH&S).  

  • This position is on call during periods of inclement weather and may need to report to work during University closures for emergency repairs or mitigation of a guideway heating system leak. 

  • This position may be required to work mandatory overtime in support of University events and PRT system needs, and may be required to work different or extended shifts to facilitate the monitoring or repair of guideway systems, in support of PRT Operations. 

  • Assist in vehicle recovery efforts and other PRT maintenance activities as needed.
     


Pay Grade: 13. WVU provides competitive wages for its employees, and takes related experience and education into consideration when determining appropriate salary.



Shift: 6:00 am - 2:00 pm



Qualifications




  • High School diploma or G.E.D. and up to 18 months of education or training beyond high schoolor an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience

  • Two (2) years experience in one or more of the following:

    • Industrial plumbing system repairs

    • Metal fabrication

    • Mechanical system operation/troubleshooting/maintenance

    • Installation/operation/repair of hydronic heating systems

    • General HVAC concepts and applications



  • Two (2) years experience in a fast-paced. stressful environment where good decision-making skills are essential

  • Ability to comprehend the operations, services, and activities of a comprehensive transit system

  • Ability to apply terminology, methods, practices, and techniques used in a professional maintenance environment

  • Ability to understand emergency and incident reporting requirements related to operational hazards and safety practices

  • Ability to comprehend related Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations

  • Ability to perform multiple activities necessary to, efficiently and safely, perform required duties

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow staff members

  • Maintain accurate basic records, and complete brief forms and reports clearly and accurately

  • Ability to detect unusual, hazardous, or emergency situations, and take appropriate action within prescribed guidelines

  • Ability to gain knowledge of policies and procedures pertaining to the work, including the PRT operating processes, station and guideway layout, and the actions required in unusual or emergency situations

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Knowledge of commercial natural gas fired boiler operation and maintenance

  • Knowledge of mechanical systems, including pumps, piping, and various flow control devices

  • Knowledge and experience with materials, tools, and safety practices of the plumbing, mechanical and electrical trades

  • Knowledge and techniques of electric/gas welding and general metal fabrication

  • Able to read and interpret schematics and drawings
