Summary

The Agronomy Technician directly contributes to the success of CSS Farms by carrying out agronomic processes related to potato production that will be used to make informed decisions on the farm.

Responsibilities

In this role you will:


  • Support the Agronomist in commercial crop production through regular scouting and hands-on field work.

  • Inspect, monitor, and report on insect and disease.

  • Assess plant growth and collect and report in season data.

  • Soil and plant tissue sampling.

  • Contribute to quality control of farm operations such as seed handling and cutting, planter spacing accuracy, and test digs.

  • Perform lab duties that support storage management and decision making such as performing quality and bruise free assessments.

  • Support research and development efforts.  

  • Take on other tasks and responsibilities, as needed.

Physical Demands

This position works closely with the land and spends a large amount of time in the field.  This includes:


  • Extensive walking and working outdoors, in the elements.

  • Repetitive bending, kneeling, and digging.

  • Driving between farm sites to move samples and other supplies.

  • Regularly lifting objects (such as potato samples) of up to 50 lbs.

Expected Hours of Work


  • Typical, daily farm hours are 7 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday, occasional Saturdays.

  • Harvest and planting seasons are busy and may require longer hours and some weekends.

 

Required Qualifications


  • A high school diploma or equivalent.

  • A valid driver’s license or the ability to acquire one and pass vehicle insurance verification.

Desired Qualifications


  • Relevant coursework in agriculture.

  • A basic level of proficiency with technology, such as basic computer skills and use of scouting applications.

  • Excellent organizational skills and appreciation for the value of accurate sampling and reporting.

  • Basic math skills and the ability to maintain accurate counts.  

  • Knowledge and/or experience with agricultural operations is a plus.
