Human Resources Generalist at Amsted Rail in Petersburg, Virginia

Job Description:

This role performs Human Resources related duties at the professional level and may carry out responsibilities in the functional areas of employee relations, and professional recruiting.

Employee Relations

• As a Human Resources employee serves as a coach/facilitator to optimize employee involvement in the resolution of issues.


• Works closely with management and the employees to improve work relationships, build morale, increase productivity and retention.


• Responds to employee complaints, harassment allegations and civil rights complaints.


• Responsible for the employee handbook in the development and implementation of personnel policies and procedures in compliance with federal and state regulations.


• Provides day to day performance management guidance to line management (coaching, counseling, career development and disciplinary action.


• Manages hourly time and attendance process

Recruiting

• Confers with management to identify, job specifications, job duties, qualifications, and skill.


• Plans and coordinates recruitment programs, budgets, and collateral to attract applicants and to fill specific job openings, makes recommendations for improvements.


• Develops and maintains network of contacts to help identify and source qualified candidates Initiates contact with possible qualified candidates for specific job openings.


• Reviews applications and interviews applicants to obtain work history, education, training, job skills, and salary requirements, and to provide information about the organization and position. Screens and refers candidates for additional interviews with others in organization.


• Writes and places job advertising in various media.


• Develops and coordinates internal job posting program and writes job openings.


• Coordinates participation in, sets up display, and works at job fairs. Develops and maintains contacts with schools, alumni groups, and other public organizations to find and attract applicants.  Makes public presentations at schools, organizations, and job fairs regarding the company and the opportunities available. 


• Works with external recruiters and employment agencies to identify and recruit candidates. Utilizes internet online recruiting sources to identify and recruit candidates.


• Provides information on company facilities and job opportunities to potential applicants.


• Designs, conducts and coordinates on-boarding/new employee orientation.


• Performs reference and background checks on applicants.


• Files and maintains employment records for future reference.

Preferred Experience

• Bachelor's degree in HR, business or related study (preferred)


• Compliance (at least 1 year, preferred) 


• PC skills in all Microsoft Products and HRIS systems.


• Leadership and interpersonal skills to promote communication, team work, and individual accomplishment while addressing issues and conflict directly.


• Prior skills in problem solving and negotiating.
