We are hiring immediately for a Full Time Programmer Analyst to join The Cameron County Hispanic Cohort and Clinical Research Unit as part of the UTHealth School of Public Health - Brownsville Regional Campus. This is a hybrid position working both remotely and in office. In this position you would assist with the management of data from a large expanding cohort dataset including genetics and imaging. Tasks include migration to the cloud, interaction with a scientist analyzing the data, responding to requests and information for data subsets.

Position Summary:

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Public Health Brownsville campus has created a new position for a programmer analyst I to join the team managing a large Mexican American cohort database. This position will manage data for the Cameron County Hispanic Cohort, which consists of extensive and complex longitudinal variables covering phenotyping, sociodemographic, laboratory measurements, genetics, transcriptomics, proteomics and a wide range of imaging. The team collaborates extensively with research teams in Vanderbilt, University of North Carolina, the McGovern Medical School in Houston, and University of San Diego, where we collaborate with physicians, geneticists, and experts in management and analysis of cohort data. The program is growing exponentially. Someone is needed to assist with the preparation of new data entry screens, and manage this large database as it is moved to a cloud-based technology (AWS or Microsoft Azure). The successful applicant will join a team of highly trained local researchers on site, many of whom have been with the program 10 years or more. Additional training will be continuously available.

Position Key Accountabilities:


  • Interviews clients/users and departmental personnel for problem definition to ensure that a program is written that fits the user's needs or changes are made to resolve any existing problems.
  • Develops program specifications for programming modules, programs specifications, testing, JCL and documentation ensuring conformity and consistency with system and department standards.
  • Writes, tests, and implements computer programs. Codes straight-forward to somewhat complex programs and ensures that the programs conform to departmental standards.
  • Assists with acceptance testing of purchase software and/or upgrades to existing system software to ensure user/client needs are met.
  • Participates in structured technical and functional walk-through with project team members and reports status of programming to Project Manager on a regular basis to ensure a full understanding of the program and the status of completion.
  • Resolves problems that arise with existing production systems to ensure the efficiency and proper functioning of programs and systems.
  • Other duties as assigned

Certification/Skills:


  • Knowledge of computer hardware, software, and programming.

Minimum Education:


  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, related field or relevant experience in lieu of education.

Minimum Experience:


  • One year of programming experience.
  • Previous experience in relational databases like Visual Basic, .NET, or Visual Basics 6, PowerApps, Microsoft Power Fx, Microsoft Access, or SQL is highly preferred.
  • SAS, Python, or R experience is a plus.

Physical Requirements:Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.Security Sensitive:This job class may contain positions that are security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code § 51.215
