The Chelsea Health Center (CHC) Laboratory is a moderately sized CORE laboratory that focuses on moderate to high complexity testing within CHC- a comprehensive primary care center. Testing encompasses Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis and limited Microbiology. Phlebotomy, EKG's and specimen collection are also performed at CHC laboratory. Performs blood, urine and body fluid tests on humans with speed, method, precision and understanding of theory behind tests; studies morphology of constituents of blood to obtain data for use in diagnoses and treatment of disease.
Gains experience and develops working knowledge by performing routine and complex procedures utilizing complex instrumentation and manual methods
Responsible for the accuracy, interpretation and reporting of results
Performs and keeps accurate records of equipment maintenance and quality control
Refers problems and unusual results to appropriate personnel if cannot resolve on own
Performs clerical and support services as needed. Responds to customer needs and requests
Participates in proficiency testing of unknowns and internal and external continuing education
Participates in continuing education programs related to laboratories
Chelsea HealthCare Center Lab Specific:
Receives acceptable blood specimens sent to laboratory, labels specimen and requisition with laboratory computer number and logs information into computer. Separates specimens to be sent to proper testing station.
Measures blood quantitatively using automation
Performs automated testing of: CBC, platelet, retic and autodiff; ESR; urinalysis (macro and micro) and Chemistry
Performs spun hematocrits using micro-capillary centrifuge, microscopic urinalysis, rapid Flu, rapid RSV, urine hCG, Wet Preps, as well as microscopic differential cell counts.
Prepares slides for manual staining.
Consults with fellow Technologist, Senior Technologist and/or Supervisor technologist regarding difficult analyses or abnormal finding. If not available, then refer specimen to Boston.
Knowledgeable regarding normal and abnormal white blood cells as well as red blood cell and platelet morphology.
Knowledgeable regarding rare and improbable results in Chemistry and Hematology as well as results that are incompatible with life and exercises good judgment handling these results
Knowledgeable regarding standard laboratory math and calculations needed to complete various work assignments.
Prepares reagents and controls used in conducting blood and urine (requires pipetting skills).
Records results of tests conducted in laboratory computer. Operates computer terminals to enter and retrieve pertinent laboratory information and reports, corrects inaccurate laboratory data.
Assist Senior Technologist and/or Supervisory. Helps to answer laboratory-related questions.
Performs quality control procedures accurately and according to procedures, correctly documents corrective action logs and instrument maintenance logs.
Follows all safety (including infection control and hazardous material) policies and procedures. Notifies supervisor of unsafe conditions. Successfully participates in safety education and competency activities. Responds to and promptly resolves all unsafe conditions.
Proficient in Microsoft Word office suite including MS Word, Excel and Outlook
Prioritize work appropriately
Very good time management skills. Utilize time effectively and efficiently.
Demonstrate initiative during slower times on bench assignment
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
B.S. or B.A. Degree in a relevant science is required. Minimum 3 years of laboratory experience. ASCP certification is preferred, and experience working in a CLIA/CAP regulated laboratory would be desirable.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES REQUIRED
Experience working with human samples.
Meticulous and methodical record keeping.
Ability to pick up techniques quickly.
Experience working with LIMS systems.
Experience in assay development and validation.
Knowledge of hematological malignancies would be an advantage.
Excellent written communication skills and competency in writing SOPs.
Must be organized and capable of following protocols.
Good hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity.
Ability to work well with others.
Must have demonstrable experience in method development and trouble shooting.
Must be proficient with MS Office programs such as MS Word, PowePoint, Excel and statistical packages.
Ability to work independently on designated projects.
