Job Description:

Our Research Triangle Park office is seeking highly-motivated and detail-oriented Water Resources Interns to support water quality management and water resources studies. In this position, you will perform extensive and physically rigorous field work. These projects will involve surveying stream channel characteristics (width, depth, bottom elevation) at designated cross-section sites, measuring stream flow with acoustic doppler technology, conducting dye studies to estimate time of travel and develop stream flow-velocity empirical equations for QUAL2K modeling segments, boating and wading segments to obtain physical water chemistry profiles (temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and conductivity), conducting water chemistry sampling (e.g., biochemical oxygen demand, nutrient series, solids) synoptically covering many miles of stream, and potentially supporting sediment oxygen demand and reaeration studies with state-of-the-art in situ equipment. Opportunities may also be available to support additional projects including various types of modeling, feasibility studies, conceptual and full design of stormwater control measures, and one water planning.

The RTP office is comprised of professionals who work in a highly collaborative environment (both in-person and virtually) with colleagues and clients across the country and internationally to solve a wide variety of challenges for a diverse group of clients. While the focus is on water resources solutions for local, state, and federal agencies, we are a full-service team that provides project life-cycle solutions through modeling, watershed assessments and planning, best management practice (BMP) recommendations, design (infrastructure, BMPs, stormwater control measures, dams, smart site design), construction oversight, water quality sampling, and trend monitoring.

Your Responsibilities Will Include:


  • Perform field investigations and inspections
  • Conduct hydrologic and hydraulic analysis
  • Analyze watershed data using GIS and statistical techniques
  • Develop or prepare descriptive charts, figures/maps, and tables/matrices
  • Perform writing assignments to contribute to project documentation such as memos and reports
  • Support field analysis of watershed resources (upland, wetland, riparian and stream channel areas)

You'll Bring These Qualifications:


  • Must have completed a Bachelor's degree (or will complete by May 2022) in Infrastructure & Environmental Systems, Geology, Ecology, Biology, Civil or Environmental Engineering or other related field. Master's degree or PhD graduate students preferred
  • Able to work in the field and assist in the field data collection and surveying
  • Familiarity with water quality and biological sampling techniques preferred
  • Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel and ArcGIS
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated interest in emerging topics in water resources
