Research Genetic Counselor (3-309-1127) The Endocrinology, Diabetes & Nutrition Division at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is recruiting for a Research Genetic Counselor to work on an exciting study comparing methods of contact of family members for cascade screening and the associated ethical considerations.  The study population are members of the Amish community, and all participant interactions will occur in Lancaster, PA.  The genetic counselor will work as an integral member of the research team, providing pre- and post-test counseling, including general information about familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) and long QT syndrome (LQTS), risks and benefits of genetic testing, informational and support resources and a medical referral letter summarizing key aspects of the counseling session.  It is hoped that data from this study will lead to improved uptake of cascade screening for LQTS and FH.   The University of Maryland School of Medicine is home to an excellent Master’s in Genetic Counseling Training Program.  Interested candidates will have the opportunity for participating in teaching and mentoring of genetic counseling and medical students.  This position offers a mix of clinical and research activities along with a flexible work schedule. 
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • General clinical genetics responsibilities with direct participant contact via home visits and follow up after genetics consultation, including communication with participants, families and other health care providers and assisting families with referrals. 
  • Responsibilities will also include research coordination activities including obtaining informed consent and documenting research activities.  Training will be provided for these functions.
  • Obtain and evaluate a detailed pedigree using standardized nomenclature.
  • Obtain past medical history and review necessary research records.
  • Analyze and interpret information obtained from any appropriate resource materials relevant to each case for diagnostic evaluation and management.
  • Provide comprehensive information to families and to health care providers regarding the etiology, inheritance, incidence/carrier risks, and natural history/prognosis for genetic condition/diseases in culturally appropriate terms that each will comprehend.
  • Participate in research meetings.
  • As appropriate, supervise trainees in genetic counseling.
  • Special projects as needed.



Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree in genetics/genetic counseling from an Accreditation Council of Genetic Counseling accredited program and/or Active Board Certification or Board eligibility by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.  Selected candidate will be required to obtain a Pennsylvania genetic counselor license.When applying, please submit a CV and names of three references.   Expected rank for this position will be Assistant Professor or higher, however, final rank and tenure status will be commensurate with selected candidate’s experience.
