Ashland has an exciting opportunity for a Safety Specialist to join our Specialty Ingredients G.P. business at our Parlin, New Jersey facility. This is a very visible, significant role within the Company and the manufacturing operation. This position will report to the EHS Manager. This position will also provide support to several other manufacturing locations in New Jersey.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:


  • Safely follow Ashland policies and procedures

  • Support Process Safety Management (PSM), Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and Pre-safety Start-up Reviews (PSSR) activities.

  • Work with the site EHS Manager to ensure completion of regulatory requirements

  • Participate in Facility Risk Assessments and development of Strategic/Tactical goals

  • Lead the facility union-management joint health and safety committee and drive continuous improvement in the EHS culture

  • Responsible for working with production, maintenance, engineering, and resource support groups to identify risks and implement corrective actions.

  • Execute EHS improvement projects as a individual or team member, including capital projects

  • Develop annual EHS training plans, create and deliver EHS training lessons, and manage plantwide training program

  • Conduct and document regular health and safety inspections and provide coaching to all employees, contractors, and visitors to ensure continuous improvement and trend results of facility inspections to develop improvement plans.

  • Lead contractor safety programs including the sites electronic prequalification program, contractor orientation and training, and contractor inspections.

  • Participate in incident responses including emergency response procedures, incident investigations, and implementation of corrective action plans

  • Oversee site security program

In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:


  • Bachelor of Science Degree, Engineer preferred

  • 3+ years in a chemical manufacturing, refining or pharmaceutical environment

  • Ability to work effectively with personnel in all departments and roles within the facility

  • Knowledge in the OSHA General Industry Standards

  • Experience with permit to work programs (confined space, hot work, line break, etc)

  • Proven communication, planning, and organization skills

  • Proven self-starter with urgency for delivering results

The following skill sets are preferred by the business unit:


  • 3+ years of OSHA PSM experience

  • ASP, CSP, CIH, or ability to obtain certification

  • 40-hour HAZWOPER trained.

  • OSHA 511 General Industry class completion

  • Ergonomics training

  • Computer skills: PC - Excel, Word, PP, SAP, Aspen
