A student research training opportunity is available in the investigation of gut-brain interactions in neurologic diseases, including multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Working under general supervision from Laura Cox and other lab members, the student will execute protocols involving a variety of routine and non-routine experiments at a professional level, and troubleshoot and implement modifications on existing techniques, as appropriate. The student may suggest alternate technical routes and suggest options based upon research in the literature. Calculates, transcribes, and analyzes data using proper techniques. This is a great opportunity for a student who is looking for research experience.
Qualifications
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintain (breed) and genotype (PCR) transgenic mice, to euthanize/perfuse mice, extract organs (i.e. brain, plasma, intestines) and conduct protein extractions and histological sections.
Administer microbiota inteventions, including live bacteria, whole microbiota, or antibiotics to animal models of neurologic diseases.
Assist or perform mouse behavioral studies (motor/cognition)
Order reagents and supplies and prepare preparations of needed reagents for all procedures.
Perform DNA extractions and microbiome library preparation. Contribute to microbiome sequence analysis.
QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma Required.
Excellent interpersonal skills, excellent oral and written communication.
