Position Description

Job Summary

The Interfaculty Initiative in Health Policy (IIHP) oversees two interdisciplinary academic programs: the undergraduate Secondary Field (minor) in Global Health and Health Policy (GHHP) and the PhD Program in Health Policy. Reporting to IIHP's Executive Director, the Senior Program Coordinator works primarily with the Secondary Field as an administrator and adviser ensuring smooth functioning of the undergraduate program, which has 80-100 graduates each year. The position also provides administrative support for the IIHP office and PhD Program in Health Policy.

Job-Specific Responsibilities

Secondary Field in Global Health and Health Policy (80% effort)
  • Advise current and prospective GHHP students. Evaluate plans of study, track students' academic progress, and answer questions about course selection, research requirements, summer plans, and post-graduate plans.
  • Update GHHP course guide and GHHP entries in various College publications and websites on an annual basis.
  • Represent GHHP at Undergraduate Program Administrator meetings and keep current on undergraduate policies, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Serve as a resource on academic matters and course logistics for faculty and TFs teaching the 4-5 courses offered annually under the auspices of the GHHP Standing Committee.
  • Plan GHHP student events (e.g., career panels, faculty dinners, peer advising sessions, symposiums, graduation receptions), sometimes in collaboration with the Harvard Global Health Institute (HGHI).
  • Publicize two GHHP summer fellowships and manage the application, selection, and orientation processes for approximately 10 recipients annually. Collaborate with HGHI and other departments/organizations across the University to determine joint fellowship funding awards. Ensure that recipients comply with all Harvard regulations and requirements (e.g., complete Assumption of Risk Forms, obtain Health Clearance to travel, etc.) and provide support throughout the duration of the fellowships, as needed.
  • Communicate regularly with students in the GHHP community. Share events, opportunities, and resources with current students and alumni through the GHHP Listservs.
  • Maintain the GHHP website on the OpenScholar platform.
  • Take on new assignments and responsibilities as appropriate.
  • Attend occasional evening events.

IIHP and PhD Program in Health Policy (20% effort)
  • Perform general office functions (e.g., purchase office supplies, serve as a liaison with building services).
  • Perform financial functions (e.g., process student financial awards, process reimbursements, pay invoices).
  • Assist with IIHP events and meetings as needed (e.g., manage logistics, order food).
  • Assist with administration of the PhD program as needed (e.g., coordinate logistics for applicant interviews).


Basic Qualifications
Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications in order to be considered for this role:
Five or more years of related experience. Education beyond high school may count toward experience.


Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Experience in higher education preferred, and interest in global health and health policy a plus.
  • Commitment to undergraduate education; high level of comfort with frequent student contact and ability to advise a wide diversity of students.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and exhibit sound judgment.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and engaging and supporting diverse constituents.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and verbal/written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and timely follow-through; demonstrated ability to take initiative and to work both independently and as part of a team in a student-centered environment.
  • Strong computer skills, including knowledge of MS Office and interest in learning new technologies.
