The Department of Biostatistics is a very busy and diverse department focused on research and teaching. Our 70+ faculty are leaders in the development of statistical methods for clinical trials and observational studies, studies on the environment, computational biology, and genomics/genetics. We offer degree programs in biostatistics, computational biology and data science; currently, more than 200 students are enrolled in these programs.
The Senior Operations Manager will work directly with Associate Professor Jukka-Pekka "JP" Onnela, members of the Onnela Lab group, external technology vendors, IRB and information technology teams, the lab's grant and finance managers, and the lab's clinical and academic collaborators (including Principal Investigators, Clinicians, Research Assistants, and Study Coordinators) to support the lab's research in digital phenotyping, specifically the Beiwe Research Platform. This is an exciting and innovative research area for an applicant interested in medical research, the study of human behavior, technology, and data science. The successful candidate is a self-motivated person who enjoys working in a deadline-driven team environment, is detail-oriented, can juggle multiple priorities, enjoys problem solving, and is ready to contribute to the work of an interdisciplinary research group.
The Onnela Lab currently collaborates with researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital, McLean Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University in areas ranging from psychiatry to neurology, surgery, and neuroscience. The Senior Operations Manager will serve in various capacities to ensure successful communication and project progress in the various research collaborations. Position Description
The position will have primary responsibility for oversight and coordination of all laboratory operations including:
1. Managing operations of the Beiwe Research Platform
Serve as the main point of contact for collaborators, including other Principal Investigators, Clinicians, and Clinical Research Assistants and Coordinators
Consult collaborators on IRB documents pertaining to studies that make use of the lab's research platform and smartphone application at their institutions
Create studies and assign access credentials in the platform's online portal
Create and maintain documentation on the platform and the smartphone app
Ongoing support for any operational or technical issues
Communicate to collaborators of any server issues from external vendors and communicate IT and app issues from collaborators to external vendors
Jointly supervise (with Dr. Onnela) student research assistants involved in research collaborations, to move projects forward and assist in different capacities as needed
2. Serving as liaison and operational manager of software development teams
Coordinate with external technology vendors on design and development projects
Test and validate technologies, provide feedback, and report IT issues/bugs as needed
Drive forward new initiatives or development projects related to the research platform and smartphone application
Other responsibilities include:
Edit and prepare of manuscripts for publication and coordinate the submission process with the research staff
Work with Senior Grants Managers and Financial Associates to produce financial reports and funds availability for project expansions, data storage, and other costs associated with the project
Work with Financial Associates, Associate Director of Finance, and central finance administrators bi-annually to adjust and report on Beiwe service center costing model
Supervise and direct research assistant(s) on research platform and smartphone application related items, including beta-testing, data collection, and other research needs
Act as the point-person for external and internal collaborators
Support grant writing and preparation
Other duties as assigned
PLEASE NOTE: This position has a term end date of 1 year from the date of hire with the strong possibility for extension.
PLEASE NOTE: The primary work location for this position is Boston, MA and in order to be on Harvard payroll, you must reside in one of the following states - MA, NH, RI, ME, CT, VT, NY, MD, or CA. Until our return to campus and full operational status, which is still to-be-determined, this interview process and position will take place in a slightly modified manner - including virtual interviews and a combination of remote and on-site onboarding and work. On-campus/in-person work is expected, though, upon start date - in accordance with approved COVID-related guidelines and protocols.
Bachelor's degree required or equivalent experience required
5+ years directly related experience required
Additional Qualifications and Skills
The following job-specific skills and competencies are preferred:
Master's degree or advanced academic coursework in biomedical sciences and public health preferred
Proficient in Microsoft Office, with high skill level in Excel, and PowerPoint
Familiarity with managing and maintaining databases, knowledge of web editing tools (WordPress) and new software (Qualtrics, Certain, etc.)
Experience with Adobe Creative Suite
Familiarity with programming languages, including R and Python
Excellent writing and communication skills
Experience setting priorities and to working independently with minimal supervision to meet competing deadlines
Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
Experience handling complex and confidential information with discretion
Demonstrated entrepreneurial mindset a plus
Outstanding interpersonal and customer service skills, demonstrated by maintaining positive relationships with various stakeholders
