Underwriter, North American Public D&O Division at Allied World in Boston, Massachusetts

Job Description:

Allied World is looking for a Public Directors & Officers underwriter to join our team in our New York office. The successful candidate will be responsible for underwriting and helping grow a complex book of business (industrials, biotech, high-tech, healthcare, real estate, etc.), while meeting profitability, GWP, and expense goals.  Looking for experienced, enthusiastic, energized individual comfortable in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Underwrite Directors & Officer insurance for publicly traded companies.


• Meet with members of the C-suite of prospective insureds (CEO, CFO, General Counsel, etc.).


• Analyze the stock performance, business strategy, management team, corporate governance and financial statements of prospective insureds;


• Evaluate risk related to ESG, network/cyber security and regulatory matters.


• Work with Public D&O division management to craft terms and proposals to win business.


• Involve other Allied World management, units or offices as necessary.


• Negotiate with the prospective insured’s broker to win deals while maintaining price/risk discipline and profitability.


• Market to existing brokers and develop new relationships.


• Attend client/broker meetings, lunches, dinners, and other social outings, as applicable.


• Meet with key brokers regularly to discuss production, service, and other topics relevant to success.


• Present the Allied World story and Allied World products to brokers and other external and internal parties.


• Stay current with respect to major world, economic, business, and industry issues and developments.


• Follow the stock market and capital markets in general.


• Comply with underwriting guidelines, systems, and procedures.


• Provide specific reports as needed by senior staff.


• Generate new business production on a monthly basis.


• Attend appropriate professional development training sessions.


• Assist with special projects as needed.

Job Requirements:

• 4-year college degree required


• 0-4 years underwriting experience (Public Directors & Officers experience is preferred)


• Solid Writing and Communication Skills


• Excellent organizational skills, and ability to multitask


• Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment


• Willingness to travel


• Must be able to think originally, be willing to challenge ideas and be receptive to having their own ideas challenged
