Job Description:

Provides mental health and/or learning support services to the campus community, including one or more of the following services: individual, couples and group counseling and therapy; crisis intervention; consultation and outreach services; psychological assessments; learning strategies counseling; academic support groups; tutor training; and tutoring.

  • Provides individual, couples and group counseling to students, staff and faculty.
  • Participates in the development and delivery of learning support, awareness, outreach and consultation services to the campus community.
  • Provides intake and on-call services to clients with personal, vocational and academic concerns and maintains appropriate case documentation, supervision and evaluation records.
  • Performs psychological/psycho-educational assessments and refers individuals to other resources as needed.
  • Develops and conducts learning strategies, awareness and outreach seminars, workshops, and programs.
  • May collaborate with other campus departments to create and implement programs for the campus community.
  • Assists in the supervision and training of interns, tutors, practicum students, student workers and/or graduate students in counseling.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

    Minimum qualifications:

    A Master's degree in Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, or Social Work. Licensure is required at time of interview. We welcome applicants who do not have prior counseling center experience provided candidates clearly articulate how their experience in other settings can be translated to a counseling center/higher education setting. The successful candidate will have strong attention and motivation to multicultural competence, demonstrated by awareness of their areas for multicultural growth, an openness to working with a wide range of diverse clients, and the pursuit of continued education.

    Desired Qualifications:

    Candidates who are three plus years post-licensure and have experience and expertise in one or more of the following areas: health psychology; professional medical students; BIPOC population, single session therapy (SST), crisis intervention, and outreach programming.

    General responsibilities :|
    This position is embedded within the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine (COM). The Embedded Counselor (EC) will have a split schedule in which 80 percent of their time will be serving COM students and 20 percent at Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) serving undergraduate and graduate students, staff, and faculty. The EC's primary responsibility will be providing mental health counseling, consultation, and outreach to the medical students of the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine. The EC will establish and maintain service presence within the COM, including networking and marketing service availability, assessing, and addressing stigma and barriers to seeking services, and collaborating with administration, faculty, and staff to meet clinical and programmatic needs of the medical students. Overall, the EC will provide multi-culturally competent individual, couples, and group services within a short-term therapy framework; facilitate mental health workshops; adhere to stepped care principles in assessing a student's fit for services; perform crisis intervention and assessment and engage in consultation and outreach.

    The University of Houston's Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is a vital department under the Health and Well-being portfolio within the Division of Student Affairs. CAPS works closely with our Health and Well-being partners, which include the Student Health Center; Campus Recreation; UH Wellness; Justin Dart, Jr. Student Accessibility Center; and Cougars in Recovery. CAPS is accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services and offers an APA accredited internship in Health Service Psychology. Our staff consists of licensed psychologists, doctoral and master's level mental health professionals, and advanced graduate trainees in counseling, clinical, and school psychology. Within our Stepped Care model, our services include triage, essential skills workshops, single session therapy, group counseling, short-term couples and individual counseling. We also offer many resources and outreach to include "Let's Talk", QPR, and on demand trainings on a variety of mental health topics.
