An operating group of The Andersons, Inc., the Trade Group specializes in the movement of physical commodities such as whole grains, feed ingredients and energy products.

Trainees in our Merchandiser in Training (MIT) program receive a broad and hands-on experience in all aspects of our business, including the buying and selling of commodities, daily analysis of markets, and price developments; along with a strong understanding of Andersons Trade Group internal business model. This is made possible by a proven, in-depth curriculum that allows trainees to complete two 6-month rotations - one rotation in our Idaho Falls, ID office and one in our North America based trading locations.

In the MIT Program, you would expect the following experiences:

  • An introduction to our grains, feed ingredients and energy businesses including: Trading terminology, Trading and logistic dynamics, Relationship building with customers, Tools, concepts, and systems of trading

  • Understanding of internal divisions such as Credit, Accounting, and Business Development

  • On-going formal soft skill development and on the job training

  • Rotation through our US trading locations, including Idaho Falls, ID

  • Mentoring provided by a profit center manager

  • An Associate Merchant position within one of our divisions upon successful completion of the MIT Program

Position Overview

This position is a developmental role focused on learning all aspects of the merchandising field during two, 6-month rotations at our Idaho and North American trading locations. The purpose of this position is to gain the necessary knowledge and experience to have the opportunity to transition into an entry level role within 12 months.

Key Responsibilities

  • Learn Trading terminology, tools, concepts, and systems

  • Build and maintain relationships with customers

  • Gain a working knowledge of Trade Group operations including but not limited to general operations, procurement, sales, logistics, accounting, project management, financial reporting and organizational management

What is expected of you and others at this level

  • Knowledge and exposure to fundamental theories, principles and concepts gained through education and/or experience

  • Develops competence by performing structured work assignments

  • Uses existing procedures to solve routine or standard problems

  • Receives instruction, guidance and direction

Minimum Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree required, preferably in Agriculture, Business, Finance, Economics, or related major

  • A minimum of 1 year of relevant work experience or internships

  • Willingness to travel and flexibility to relocate

  • Fluent in English, knowledge of a second language is a plus

  • Demonstrated natural leadership ability

  • Self-starter; highly motivated and able to work both independently and in a team environment

  • Global Mindset; Entrepreneurial attitude

  • Customer service oriented

  • Strong negotiation skills

  • High energy levels; action oriented

  • Able to proactively identify and resolve problems

  • Detail oriented in the areas that require analysis

  • Excellent written and verbal skills
