Position Purpose:

Research Assistants in the Ackerman Lab contribute to the understanding of immune responses by overseeing the design, conduct, and analysis of clinical research studies, while also ensuring that the laboratory operates at the highest level of quality. Successful candidates will have opportunities to perform cutting edge research that directly impacts human health and the success of clinical trials.


At the Dartmouth Antibody Lab, we have a small team committed to providing best in class antibody characterization and assessment in support of clinical trials across diverse disease states including HIV, Polio, Influenza, COVID-19, and much more. We use a combination of biophysical methodologies including flow cytometry and electrochemiluminescence to characterize antibody responses and then develop and implement correlational and predictive models which can be used to inform downstream clinical vaccine development or trial outcomes. A Research Assistant in our group will be trained to independently design and execute a suite of assays to gather relevant data, then analyze and report their findings. They will also be active members of a highly engaged, close-knit lab and contribute to lab operations.


Description:

Seeking a candidate with a Bachelors/Masters (major in one of the Biological/Chemical Sciences or the equivalent) to become a member of a collaborative group of researchers that biophysically characterize antibodies elicited during immunization or passive infusion using specialized techniques developed in the Ackerman lab. Working with researchers who are at the cutting edge of HIV/Polio/COVID-19 vaccine development, a qualified applicant will contribute to the development and understanding of vaccine responses by providing reliable data and analysis. Candidates must be organized, able to work independently, and have competence in basic laboratory procedures and techniques.


This is a full-time, 40 hours/week position.


Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp:

Bachelors plus 3-5 years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience


Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:



  • Bachelors degree with a major in one of the Biological Sciences, Chemistry, or the equivalent.

  • Five years of relevant research experience or the equivalent working in a laboratory.

  • High competency in basic laboratory skills (pipetting, weighing, and recordkeeping).

  • High competency in one or more of the following: robotic liquid handling, flow cytometry, protein chemistry, or analytical chemistry.

  • Willingness to work with hazardous materials such as infectious materials, human and simian bodily fluids, and/or hazardous chemicals.

  • Ability to lift a 50 pound container of reagent.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Masters degree with a major in one of the Biological Sciences, Chemistry, or the equivalent.

  • Ability to learn, develop, and apply new techniques.

  • Ability to work independently and apply critical thinking and sound judgment.

  • Ability to train additional team members on laboratory and research procedures.

  • Good organizational and time management skills.

  • Editorial skills for preparation of reports.

  • Knowledge of computers and software applications.

  • Collects, analyzes, and interprets data resulting from experimentation.

  • Performs literature searches to develop information of relevance to the research.

  • Prepares appropriate and understandable representations of data such as sequences, graphs, charts, etc. through the use of multiple software tools (e.g. Excel, Graphpad Prism, R).

  • Participates in the preparation of reports and presentations of the research findings. Presents at laboratory meetings.

  • Contributes to the preparation of scientific manuscripts by independently drafting text, preparing graphs, tables, and charts, etc.
