Job Description:

We are looking for a talented Senior Research Engineer (Connected and Intelligent Systems Research) to join our team specializing in Engineering for our Corporate Organization in Columbus, IN / your remote home office. This hybrid role will be based out of Columbus, IN with flexibility for remote work, with a weekly onsite presence required approximately 2 days/week.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:


  • Work independently as well as with a diverse team to develop and apply advanced technology solutions to Cummins products and services using modeling, advanced controls, optimization, estimation, and connectivity technologies. 

  • Validate performance of the developed solution through simulations and application on target product to mature technology to be transferred to the Cummins business.

  • Document technology and results through patent applications, technical reports, and publications.

  • Stay current with advances in system technologies to seek out new ideas and applications.

  • Work in a team environment with colleagues across Corporate Research and Technology and business units as needed.

To be successful in this role you will need the following:



  • Doctorate degree in an Engineering field (Electrical/Mechanical/Computer) with research experience in the application of advanced control methods and system optimization such as optimal control, MPC, estimation, or detection algorithms


  • Or master’s degree in related areas of control or computer science with demonstrated experience in the application of control, optimization, or machine learning systems

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in controls

  • Knowledge and application of advanced control, optimization, estimation, and simulation.

  • Proficiency in MATLAB and Simulink and a programming language such as C, C++, or Python.

  • Demonstrated ability in research and product development and validation through simulation.

  • Demonstrated ability in research and product development through rapid prototyping tools such as Speedgoat or dSPACE is desired.
