Job Description
Reports to the Coordinator/Director. Operates basic radiologic equipment determining the quality and quantity of ionizing radiation to make quality radiographs on injured and/or sick patients as directed by physicians following accepted policies and procedures under the direction of radiologists.MISSION, VALUES and SERVICE GOALS

Job Responsibility
Performs Procedures and Examinations:

  • Performs Radiology procedures and examinations according to physician's orders and department policies and procedures.

  • Evaluates radiographs for technical quality to ensure accurate diagnosis.

  • Exhibits skilled positioning techniques when needed in unusual situations, such as trauma, surgical or immobile patients to ensure the most diagnostic images possible.

  • Consults with the Pain Service Physician to obtain correct levels to be viewed.

  • Understands how to obtain the best image while minimizing exposure, including Boost, Pulse, and Protocol Selection.

  • Prepares a sterile set-up for each procedure performed under fluoroscopy according to AORN Standards.

  • Able to prep a patient using proper technique according to AORN Standards.

  • Turns over procedure room in a timely manner using approved cleansing agents.

Image Management/Record Keeping:

  • Obtains accurate patient histories from patient, nurse caring for the patient and the physician, documents in the appropriate manner.

  • Checks patient exam charges to ensure correct patient charging (credit, cancel, revise, add, etc.)

  • Results procedural information into the RIS in a timely manner.

  • Ensures images are in proper files on PACS.

  • Notifies appropriate person when corrections on PACS need to be made with images/files.

  • Enters patient information accurately into the C-arm.

  • Prints pictures, a chart copy and one for the patient.

Equipment Operation/Room Responsibility:

  • Recognizes problems with equipment operation to correct problems.

  • Communicates to proper person for needed repairs to ensure correct operation.

  • Operates all diagnostic imaging equipment.

  • Provide clean/sanitary examination room and department for the patient.

  • Troubleshoots diagnostic imaging equipment for problems.

Miscellaneous:

  • Follows hospital radiation safety regulations.

  • Wears radiation badge at all times and submits badge monthly for testing.

  • Orients new staff and students to work areas upon request.

  • Accurately badges daily clocking, YTO, holidays and call (or timely completion of the "purple" correction form).

  • Performs any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

  • Utilizes e-mail appropriately to receive communication and to communicate to others.

Contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department:
  • Completes other job-related duties and projects as assigned.

  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.

  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.

  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.

  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.

  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.

  • Complies with established organization and department policies.

  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Job Qualifications Education and Experience:
The knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of some college or vocational training. ARRT or ARRT eligible, State Certification required. No previous experience is required. Graduate of Committee of Allied Health Education and Accreditation (AMA) Accredited Radiography Program. Must have valid 'General Certification' from Indiana State Board of Health. Must complete CR Specialist Manual within 120 days of obtaining full/part time position or within 6 months if PRN associate.

Knowledge & Skills:


  • Must possess excellent Radiographer skills in regards to positioning, technique, film critique and department protocols in relationship to film/screen and/or Computed Radiography.

  • Must have extensive computer knowledge of Computed Radiography, Radiologists/E.R. Physicians workstations, Clinical View, PACS Broker and Radiology Department networking to perform quality assurance testing, troubleshoot, and teaching/assisting Radiographers.

  • Must possess excellent teaching skills with the abilities to listen, learn and understand exam difficulties in order to help provide solutions for the best exam possible for instructing Radiology Students.

  • Extensive knowledge of a functioning Radiology Department.

  • Must have knowledge of radiation protection and understand and utilize the methods to protect patients, self and staff.

  • Must pass ARRT within 9 months of hire for radiographer position.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to take call and arrive at Hospital within 30 minutes of being called in.

  • Eye strain from RIS system and other computer monitors.

Physical Demands:

Frequent lifting, bending, stooping, walking, standing, sitting throughout the normal shift.
